FOR THE FIRST FEW WEEKS into the search for Peter, Natasha had at least attempted to follow protocol. Fury had removed her from the team that was searching for Peter, having claimed that she was too close to the situation- the assassin thought that he was one to talk.
Instead, she chose to hole herself up in the lab with Tony.
However, alternating between helping as much as she could while he built a range of suit, to sitting in a companiable silence, (it felt strangely emptier with the lack of a certain teenager hanging around though neither of them mentioned it), only worked for a short time. On the brief instance when Natasha wasn't occupying the lab, the assassin was usually training Harley in basic offensive manoeuvres with self-defence thrown into the mix- he had shyly asked after a few weeks of Natasha hanging around the lab, slowly losing her sanity.
When he'd said it was so that he could be better prepared in case of next time, Nat had fiercely assured him that there wouldn't be one before taking him to a training room.
Although eventually, sitting on the side-lines and playing a good agent had become frustrating due to Shield's lack of progress- the last time she had called Nick he had admitted that they were running out of leads. So, Natasha appointed herself a mission; to track down Hydra affiliates using any means necessary to procure information on the mutate experiments.
That was how she started tearing down Hydra bases quicker than any of Shield's tactical teams, much to the chagrin of Fury who knew it was her but couldn't definitively prove it- not that he wanted to; he wanted Peter found as fast as possible too. He just hated being left with the messy clean-up while she moved on in a flurry of anger and determination.
The majority were dead ends, the rest outdated information and abandoned bases.
Rounds of gunfire echoed behind her, but Natasha continued to march calmly towards the main entrance of yet another Hydra base- there were countless numbers of them.
"I'm going in Rogers." She spoke into her comm set.
"Me-et you the-re." Came a crackled response.
The door creaked as she forced it open, fluidly shooting down an agent who attempted to sneak up on her from behind. Their body thumped to the ground but she never looked back to see it. However, at the sound, various agents turned in surprise at her arrival; there was a moment of silence as Natasha stood in the doorway, mentally counting her opponents until one of them dared to shoot.
On instinct, Natasha ducked behind a crate and shot over the top, easily taking out two men who crumpled to the floor. Drawing in a deep breath, she launched out of her hiding spot.
Nimbly, Natasha landed as a soldier rushed to meet her, throwing a punch that she dodged with ease by arching her back out of the way. "You know it's not nice to hit a lady." She teased, grabbing their wrist with her left hand, and holding the gun to their chest with an iron grip. The soldier struggled uselessly and Natasha hit them twice with her right, square in the nose. He sagged against her body, and she spun round, using his limp form as a human shield while a trio of guns aimed directly at her.
Huffing, she shot them down one by one before dropping the body. He landed face down.
When she turned around, blowing a strand of hair out of her face Natasha slammed her elbow with a crushing force against a skull, not even flinching as she continued into the rest of the base.
"Did you get lost out there?" Nat teased into the comm set. There was a slight grunt before Steve's voice came on, slightly out of breath.
"I'm doing a perimeter check."
"Roger that Rogers. Don't be too late to the party- I'm having all the fun." She looked around.
The base was mostly a bust. It had only been a handful of guards; some type of removal team that were moving crates of weapons and research over into a new base that wasn't on Shield's radar yet.
As the woman rounded a corner, a soldier hurled himself forwards while shooting blindly from the shock of seeing the Black Widow suddenly right in front of him. However, Natasha was far quicker and used the wall to give her leverage to successfully wrap her arm around their neck, kicking their knee down simultaneously while she landed back on the ground.
He grasped feebly at her arms, but Natasha merely tightened her grip.
"The mutate project. What do you know?"
"Nothing." The man wheezed out, twitching on the floor as Nat leaned in closer, her face void of emotion as she hovered her lips over their ear.
"Wrong answer." She squeezed harder.
There was an air of danger practically radiating from the woman. "I'll just move onto the next agent if you don't give me an answer. You're breakable."
"So is, he." They choked out, a sick grin twisting their features.
Natasha loosened her hold and instead pinned the man to the floor roughly, pointing her gun at his head as she swallowed the sudden rage pulsing through her. "Who?"
"The boy." The soldier heaved out. Natasha applied more pressure to his windpipe, digging her fingernails into his skin. He gulped as she used her body weight to cut off his air supply.
"Talk. Or I shoot your brains out and move onto the next."
"Ok!" It was strangled but there. She released him slightly.
The man eyed the gun when she raised a single eyebrow, gesturing for him to continue.
"Hydra sent out a warning against you- the Black Widow." He rushed out.
"What did the warning say?" She prompted, listening out for Steve- he was taking an awfully long time securing a single perimeter. Worry churned in her gut.
"That, that you were coming for the mutate."
Her body stiffened at the mention of 'mutate'- she knew it could only mean Peter.
"Where is he?" Natasha urged, eyes scanning the soldier's face for any hint of deception. There was none and her heart raced immediately at the mere idea of finally finding out the location of where Peter was being kept. Of finally being able to bring him home where he belonged, where he was safe.
"Some base in the mountains, it's the only one there- please."
Mentally storing away that piece of information, Natasha ignored the relief washing over her; she felt as though she could finally breathe again, like she'd been deprived of oxygen this entire time. For a moment, she just looked at the soldier beneath her before her hand drew back and she right hooked him in the nose. He went limp, and she let out a low breath of satisfaction before she leaned back.
Suddenly, Steve rounded the corner- he eyed the body before sending the woman a questioning look.
"Why is he bleeding?" He asked, looking bruised and banged up himself.
Natasha shrugged, still straddling the Hydra soldier. "Because he's an idiot."
"I didn't know idiocy caused people to just start spontaneously bleeding from the nose." Steve commented, placing his shield on his back once again and offering the woman a hand.
"It's a new phenomenon." She announced, handcuffing the soldier and accepting the gesture. "Call Shield for back up and clean up. I have to go." She added, reloading her guns.
"You know where Peter is?" Steve asked, immediately following the assassin as she made her way back out of the base, passing multiple bodies without a single glance back at them.
"I have to tell Barton and Stark. Then we'll all meet there."
"We're getting him back then?" Steve questioned again, persistent and Nat paused for a moment, turning back to face him with a careful expression that only just hid her hope.
"We always were Rogers."
A/N
Romanoff is a badass- also her and Steve being besties and taking down Hydra bases together is beautiful. I don't make the rules :)
