2014, January
A tear drop falls from my eye and lands on the page of my diary as I smile at the memories that the two of us made.
I quickly dry my tears as I don't want to ruin my diary and reach out to grab my phone that's on the other side of my desk. I unlock my phone and check my messenger app, sighing when I see that I have no new messages.
You still haven't read my messages... When are you going to read my messages? I let out another sigh and throw my phone on my bed. I close my diary and rest my head on top of it.
As soon as I close my eyes, I hear the doorbell ring and then Mom's voice following it, "Yena! Come and see who is it, I'm washing the dishes!"
"Coming!" letting out a deep sigh, I stand up from my chair. I come out of my room and just as I'm a few feet away from the door, the door bell rings again.
Man... This person is so impatient. I take a deep breath to mentally prepare for this unexpected interaction and open the door.
On the other side, a girl is standing.
A small gasp leaves my lips as I stare at the pretty girl in front of me. She's a little taller than me and looks a bit older. Holy shiz... she's so pretty...
"Hi," she smiles at me and waves, "I'm Choi Haneul, the daughter of the family who moved in next door yesterday."
"Ah," I nod my head and show a small smile, "hello," I bow my head.
"I came here to say hello and..." she looks to her right, "Choi San! Can you hurry up?"
"I'm coming!"
Then, a boy not much taller than her, comes to stand by her. As soon as our eyes meet, we both look away.
"We came here to say hi and give you these rice cakes," the girl takes the plate of rice cakes from the boy and holds it in front of me.
"Ah, I see," I nod my head and take the plate from her, "thank you."
"I hope you enjoy it," she smiles at me.
God, she's so pretty... I snap out of my thoughts and smile back, trying to look as nice and friendly as I can, "we will, thank you."
"Well, we have to get going now," she puts her arm around her brother's shoulders. "Hope to see you around, uh..."
Do I have to tell her my name? I put on another smile, "Yena."
"Yena," she repeats with a bigger smile. "Hope to see you around, Yena. Bye."
"Goodbye," I bow my head and then close the door after they leave. Well... that wasn't so bad.
"Who was it?" Mom asks from the kitchen.
"The new neighbor's kids," I say as I take the plate of rice cakes to the kitchen and then put it on the table. "They brought rice cakes."
"Ooh~ rice cakes," Mom says, turning around to see the said food.
I pull off the plastic wrapper from the plate and then take a piece of rice cake and give it to Mom to eat.
"Hmm," Mom nods her head as she chews on the food. "It's tasty. I wonder which store they bought it from."
I take a seat behind the dining table and eat one myself, immediately nodding as I chew on it. It really is tasty. Then again, when was rice cake never tasty?
"So, how were the kids?"
"I don't know," I shrug my shoulders, eating another piece. "They seemed nice."
"I heard a girl's voice. Were there two girls?"
"No," I put another piece in my mouth. Man... these are so good.
"One girl and one boy?"
I hum in response as my mouth is too full for me to talk.
"Did they tell you their names?"
"Well," I finally gulp down the food in my mouth, "the girl introduced herself as Haneul. She was really friendly. She seemed to be older than me."
"What about the boy?"
"I'm not sure..." I tilt my head, "but I think she called him 'San'."
"San?" Mom repeats.
"San," I nod.
"Well... that's a unique name."
"Yea," I nod again as I reach for another piece of rice cake.
"Don't forget to leave some for your dad."
I look down on the plate and see that only three pieces of rice cake is left. Oops?
Knowing that if I stay here I'll end up finishing the rice cake, I stand up and go out of the kitchen, heading straight for my bedroom.
Closing the door behind me, I look at my phone that's resting on my bed. I immediately pick it up and turn on the screen. Once again, a sigh leaves my lips as I see that I have no new messages.
It's been days... No, let's not think negative. She's probably too busy.
I nod to myself as I put my phone on my bed. I sit behind my desk and take a deep breath to collect myself. Taking a pencil and my diary, I begin writing.
Dear Diary,
She still hasn't replied to any of my messages... she hasn't even read them. She must be really busy, right?
Anyways... Yesterday, new neighbors moved in next door. I just met their kids who came to deliver rice cakes. The girl, Haneul, was really friendly. She's also really pretty... She didn't have much makeup on but she was really pretty. I'm kinda envious...
As for the boy, Choi San... I'm not sure about him. I mean, it doesn't matter what I think of him as long as there's no reason for us to see each other again, right?
Right. It doesn't matter.
