A sharp, throbbing pain pulled Mathias from his unconsciousness. Opening his eyes, the first thing he saw when his blurred vision returned to normal was the blanket of snow he was lying on, face down on the ground. The smell of a mixture of gasoline and blood caressed his nostrils and a cold wind covered his face. Completely dizzy and unable to tell how long he had been passed out, Mathias lifted his head with difficulty, feeling his neck ache and looked around. Night had fallen, for how long, he couldn't known, but now darkness and cold reigned over the region.

Leaning on his hands, he wanted to stand up and better understand what had happened. But suddenly that same pain took hold of him, making him moan in pain and forcing him to stay on the ground. Seeing nothing because of the dark night, he took his cell phone from his pocket, which fortunately was still functional, and activated the small flashlight. Immediately, he discovered the origin of his pain. In his right leg, at the level of the thigh, was planted a large piece of glass.

_ "Oh fuck ..." Mathias moaned in pain, who then tried to pull it off, knowing of course that it would hurt like hell. But he couldn't stay with that piece of glass in his flesh. Taking it delicately, Mathias took a deep breath, preparing himself mentally, and with all his might, pulled the bloody shard of glass out of his thigh. The pain was great and immediate, making Mathias clench his teeth as he struggled not to scream, cursing inwardly and trying to keep his breathing regular. His face was strewn with a few small cuts, but nothing too serious.

Seeing a little blood flow from his wound and feeling the cold biting on it, Mathias pressed down with his hand, and with the help of the nearest tree trunk, was able to stand up. He picked up a big broken branch on the snow, to use it as a support for walking.

Once done, Mathias, in the light of his phone, saw that he was now in this forest at the foot of the rocky slope. The carcass of the bus was there, completely crushed against a trunk tree. Several seats had been thrown outside by the shock, as were the suitcases of the passengers lying in the snow. Mathias, with difficulty, walked to the wreckage of the vehicle.

_ "Hey? Can you hear me?!" Mathias then asked to the attention of the other passengers, hearing only the blast of the winter wind for the moment.

Through one of the broken side windows of the bus, Mathias peeked, lighting up the interior. The sight that presented itself made him shudder with horror. It was a real carnage. All of the passengers lay lifeless in the middle of the seats, all with deep wounds to their heads and bodies. The couple and their children, the accountant and the loud snoring man ... all were dead. the driver also had not survived, his eyes open but empty of all life, his body impaled on his seat by two branches of the tree which had pierced his rib cage.

Faced with this nightmare vision, Mathias stepped back and looked away. He was therefore the only survivor of this accident. Managing to keep his cool a little despite everything, he wanted to call for help with his phone.

_ "No network! Ah, great ..." Mathias muttered, already at the end of his rope. "IS THERE SOMEONE? HELP!!"

He screamed out, more in despair than anything else, and only received the response of the wind whistling through the night, as well as the distant hoot of an owl.

He could have tried to climb the rocky slope to go up to the road and hope for a car to pass by, but with the state of his leg, he would not make it. And if he decided to wait here, the cold would surely kill him before the night was over. The only option left for him was to walk through this dismal, dark forest, in the hope that he could either find some help, or a less risky path that would allow him to find his way back. And then, walking would help him keep moving and thus not die frozen in place. Wandering alone in the middle of the night in the middle of an unknown forest was such a shit idea, but in his situation, he had nothing better to offer.
