As the mistress of the castle had ordered, Mathias had been brought back once again to his cell under the castle and his wrists released from the chains which blocked him. And for once, he had not been brutalized by the three girls who had obeyed their mother's instructions, even though they continued to have some resentment against him because of the incident. Once came back in his cell, Mathias had then received something warm to eat. A plate containing a piece of meat, which turned out to be cooked pork, with a piece of bread, not stale this time. Mathias had put the meat in the bread to make a sandwich and had eaten it entirely, sitting on his mattress. It was better than nothing, and besides, the meat had been tasty and filling. Although light, this small meal would serve him to recover some strength.

Three hours had passed since he was brought back to the cell, and it was probably early afternoon by now. During these three hours, Mathias had taken the opportunity to try to rest a little, lying on the mattress and staring at the brick ceiling above. A few times he would hear the growls of the zombies in the hallways, patrolling, and sometimes he would see one walk past the bars of the cell, as if verifying that he was still there and then left. By dint of seeing them, Mathias was still a little uncomfortable because of their despicable appearance, but he wasn't so afraid of them anymore.

Mathias would have liked to take advantage of these three hours to try to get some sleep and regain more strength after the meal, but his mind was too agitated by the many questions that were boiling in him.

First of all, he wondered who would be crazy enough to try to poison such a dangerous and powerful woman as Lady Dimitrescu? Whoever had done must have been suicidal, Mathias joked a little in his head, but quickly became serious again. He could have chosen to let her be poisoned, so that he could be free to run away ... but no, that was grotesque ... the three girls, seeing their mother dead, would have immediately slaughtered and torn him apart slowly to make him suffer. And even if he had been able to get out of the castle to escape the three witches, he certainly couldn't have survived the lycans infesting the village. He had a hard time admitting it, but for now, his best chance to stay alive was to stay in this castle, with the countess.

In any case, it had allowed him to discover a new side of Lady Dimitrescu, and that she obviously did not like showing to strangers: she was capable of loving. If she didn't have feelings, she wouldn't have reacted with this worry for her daughters. She was therefore less inhuman than Mathias might have thought before. But why hide behind this cold and ruthless mask? So as not to appear weak towards others? Perhaps.

But Lady Dimitrescu was not the only subject of Mathias' thoughts. He also wondered a lot about the dream he had had, and the more time passed, the more part of him was convinced that it was not a simple dream ... this dragon coat of arms had remained marked as a hot iron in his mind, as well as his mother's words about the true legacy of the Derune family ... and it had to do with the other four families, so Dimitrescu ... Mathias sighed, rubbing his head, it still seemed too vague and complicated to him ...

But again he was dragged out of his thoughts by the creaking metallic opening of the cell door. This time, no Dimitrescu daughters, only three zombies who entered, hinting at their soft dry and inhuman moans. Mathias, suspecting that he must go out, got up and left without resistance, escorted by the living dead armed with medieval swords and axes. But this time, they didn't put chains on the young man's wrists, which confused him a bit.

Mathias did not wait long before receiving the answer from where he was going this time. For the very first time since arriving at this castle, he was finally stepping outside, even though he was escorted as a prisoner. He was taken out into the front yard of the castle, and he felt almost invigorated when he felt the fresh air outside on his face. A thin layer of snow still covered the path and the sleeping vines, but fortunately no storm. The sky was clear, with only a few clouds and a light wind was blowing over the area. It was still very cold, however, the winters being harsh, especially in these parts of Eastern Europe. Mathias shivered, his modest white shirt given to him insufficient to properly protect him. The zombies, of course, remained completely indifferent to this drop in temperature.
