"I'm 18." was the first thing I said the very millisecond I opened my eyes. It was June 30th, my birthday. And my 18th birthday in fact. Graduation, high school, all that was said and done, and so was my entire childhood. All behind me. And for some reason, that realization brought me so much joy.

"Happy birthday you idiot bisexual!" Red said from the doorway. I chucked a pillow at her and said, "Red, it's seven in the morning, why are you here?"

"Because you're finally 18! You're the youngest person out of our entire friend group, you're finally an adult and deserve to celebrate! Plus..." Red said, and I cut her off.

"My mom still doesn't know yet."

"She can't throw you back in the system, Cat, you're an adult." Red said. "Not that I'm saying she'll do that. You need to stop being so paranoid about everything."

I shifted on my feet. "Maybe you're right, Red. Maybe I should loosen up a little. I am going off to college in a matter of months, I can't keep clinging to Mom like I did when I was little. Now come on, speaking of my mom, I think she made a cake."

"At seven in the morning?"

"Oh yeah...but I enjoy having cake for breakfast! Better than cereal!" I said, laughing. I then pulled a manila folder from my desk. "Also, I forgot to tell you, I'm volunteering at the hospital starting next week. They asked if I wanted to do it because 1. I'm gonna be a doctor and 2. I was a former patient. I talked to Elle and asked if she minded, because you know, last summer at home, and she didn't, so I jumped at the chance. I'm really excited."

"Maybe you'll meet some other former patients! What about that girl Fritz?" Red asked.

Fritz. I had forgotten about her. She really looked up to me, and I wondered if she was still at the hospital 24/7 because of her mom's job. She was probably around 14 now, entering high school. Like me, she was a Hamilton Middle School alumni.

"Come on, Cat, let's go get some cake before it melts or Elle ruins it like she did last year." Red said.

"She read the box this time, Red." I said.

"I don't trust anything that comes out of your mouth, Catlynn McLemore." Red said.

"Yeah, yeah, I'm so trustworthy, Red Ashley." I said.

"Oh my God come get some cake you total dork." Red said,

_______

"What's the fresh cake disaster this year?" Evan asked from next to me as Elle was struggling to light the birthday candles.

"We only have seventeen candles, we need one more."  Elle said. "Anyone have a birthday candle on them by any chance?"

"Mom, you don't need to put 18 candles on my cake. There's numbered candles for a reason." I said. "Ooh, chocolate!"

"Wait, where's Ryan?" Evan asked. At that moment, Ryan ran in with a plastic bag in his hands. He threw it on the counter and unveiled an ice cream cake.

"Ryan, she's lactose intolerant, and I made the cake last night. Nice try though." Elle said.

"No one thought to inform me about that?" Ryan said. I laughed and said, "It's been three years since we found that out and yes, we all told you."

"Who wants the first slice?" Elle called out. I checked my phone and said, "Mom, it's 7 in the morning."

"You're right." Elle said. She pulled out some frozen waffles from the freezer and said, "Best by March 8th, 2016? Why do we still have them?"

"Sounds tasty." I said, and my entire family was horrified.

"Sunshine, there's mold all over these, you are not eating them." Elle said, and proceeded to nearly throw them in the trash.

"I dare you to eat one." Red said. I laughed and said, "I said that as a joke, I'm not that stupid."

"Says the same girl who face-planted into a wall at school singing Candy Store at the top of her lungs and gave herself a nosebleed." Cesca said.

"When was this?" Evan asked.

"Freshman year." I said. "And I didn't face plant, I gracefully ran into the wall."

"What on earth happened to the sweet Catlynn we love so much? Where did this child come from because she sure isn't Catlynn!" Jess said.

"Oh no, Cat's always been a ball of pure chaos." Red said, as I paraded around the kitchen singing You're A Grand Old Flag with a spatula in my hand.

"Right, you need to go to bed." Elle said, grabbing my arm and guiding me towards my room. "If this is what I can expect from adult Cat...then...it's gonna take some getting used to."

"Oh, come on, let the kid have fun! We're not used to seeing her like this." Alice said. Elle groaned and then let me continue my parade around the apartment.

Adulthood was gonna be fun.

AN: Why I enjoy writing chaotic Cat so much, I don't know. Mainly because I would 100% do most of the chaotic things she does in this chapter. Hope you enjoyed and catch ya later! Love you all!
