Two weeks went by before Sugawara's worst nightmare came true. Kageyama had been tasked with watching the ginger during classes and the setter soon realized that Hinata's lunches were getting smaller and smaller, with more food left on the tray each time.
Sugawara was truly starting to get worried so he decided to walk home with the ginger one day to confirm his fears. As the two of them were turning a corner, near the alley where Hinata was first attacked, Sugawara felt Hinata grab his arm and throw him against a wall.
When Sugawara looked at the first year, his heart dropped. There Hinata stood with his left eye's sclera turning an inky black while the right remained a stark white. Sugawara could tell that the younger teen didn't register any of what he was doing. His body was moving on instinct, the setter knew that all too well.
Because his body moved like that at a time.
"Hinata... don't do this..." Sugawara's airflow was cut off by Hinata strangling him up against the brick wall, "I- don't want to... hurt... you."
Hinata's eyes flickered for a moment before returning to his bloodlust-filled stare.
"I'm sorry... Shoyo." Sugawara grabbed Hinata's arms and put enough room in between himself and the wall to unleash his ukaku. Black and white feather-like dagger shot towards Hinata and pinned him against the wall across from him.
When Hinata's head hit the bricks, his eyes became normal again and full of fear. "Su- Sugawara-Senpai!?!?"
Sugawara felt his ukaku retract into his shoulder blades as he walked over to Hinata. "I'm sorry Shoyo. I never wanted this to happen."
"Wha- What are you talking about?!" Hinata was starting to hyperventilate so Sugawara put a hand on his teammate's shoulder. "Suga you're-"
"A ghoul?" Sugawara gave Hinata a small smile, " I know. So is Kageyama." Hinata's eyes widened even more than they already were. "There's a lot I need to explain. Come on, let's head to Kageyama's house."
"What?!" The feather-like daggers disappeared and Hinata's small form slid to the ground.
"A few weeks ago when you fainted, there was so much more to that night than you know." Sugawara gave Hinata a hand so the ginger wouldn't faint from shock.
---
"It's almost 8pm, what the hell do you want?" Kageyama was leaning against his front door's frame.
Sugawara held a protective arm over Hinata's shoulders. "It's time."
Kageyama sighed, "Fine..." he then moved to let the pair into his front room, "I'll make some coffee."
---
"So... I basically died and came back and went through an organ transplant!?" Hinata was shocked to say the least. His eyes glued to Kageyama's living room rug.
"Yep." Sugawara's voice was heavy.
"And now... I'm a ghoul." Hinata looked up from the floor at his two friends. Kageyama had his usual stone-expression, while Sugawara now couldn't meet his eyes.
"I'm sorry, Hinata. I- I just couldn't..."
"Well, the alternative was death so-" Hinata's normal light-hearted voice was able to cut the tension in the room, nay the entire house. "I'm happy that I'm not dead. So... honestly I should be thanking you!"
"But now you're a monster... like us."
"...So?" Sugawara was finally able to see the ginger's eyes. They were full of wonder, the complete opposite of what the third year was expecting. "I have always been fascinated by you guys... I mean the stuff on TV is only one side of the story, right?"
"The stuff on TV is absolute bullshit." Kageyama finally spoke. "You shouldn't believe anything you hear from the news or the Doves."
"Doves? Like the bird. Kageyama I don't think birds can talk... unless you count Boku-"
"I mean the CCG dumbass!"
Sugawara could tell they were about to start another one of their petty fights, "The Doves is what we call the CCG. It's a codename for them."
Hinata nodded slowly, "Ooh. That makes sense."
Sugawara looked in between the boys and saw that the situation was diffused. He then turned to face Hinata directly, "Now... are you hungry?"
---
For the next week, Sugawara and Kageyama were putting Hinata through 'Being a Ghoul 101.' Hunting. Hiding. Running. Fighting. The basics of surviving in this world as a non-human being. And it was going well... until-
"Hinata! Did you see the news?" Kageyama practically shouted into the phone. They had gradually stopped arguing 24/7 over the week though they still had their moments.
"Give me a second." Hinata got his laptop from his desk and checked the news.
"Breaking News - Miyagi: Multiple bodies have been discovered in the wake of Miyagi's famous binge-eating ghoul."
"Breaking News - Miyagi: The Binge-Eater strikes again!"
"Breaking News - Miyagi: Miyagi Prefecture will now be taking precautions until the Binge-Eater is either killed or taken into CCG custody."
"I wasn't her only victim..." Hinata said as he continued to read the headlines.
"Obviously not! And now the Doves are going to be on high-alert!" Kageyama stopped to calm his voice, "Just be careful... okay?"
"Are you okay, Kageyama?"
"Y- Yeah. It's just... I've seen things like this happen before, and last time- something went wrong." Kageyama was quiet, "I- I gotta go. Suga's calling me."
"Bye Kageyama."
"Bye."
---
The three ghouls all were as cautious as could be for the next few days. They, thankfully, had a decent amount of food already in their homes so they didn't have to go hunting. Sugawara and Kageyama were worried about when they would have to go out next. They were both known in the area. Well known.
"The Black King" and "The Silver Crow"
Two of Miyagi's most powerful ghouls. Sugawara was a very high ranking A-tier ghoul, with Kageyama being an S-tier.
The two of them were preparing for any possibility... before the worst struck.
The CCG hit a little too close to home.
