In popular psychology and analytical psychology, the term inner child is an individual's childlike aspect. It includes what a person learned as a child, before puberty. The inner child is often conceived as a semi-independent subpersonality subordinate to the waking conscious mind. 

Other experts describe this inner child as an expression of not just your child self, but your lived experience of all life stages. The inner child is also noted as a source of strength, since early experiences can play a significant part in your development as an adult.

Our age, maturity, and life experience has nothing to do with it. Whatever the mechanisms behind this phenomenon, the existence of the inner child is real- more real for some than others. ... The general idea of inner child work is that that if you make an effort to contact, listen to and communicate with, and nurture your inner child, you can find and heal the roots of your issues as an adult.

Why is it important to engage with inner child work? If you were abused, neglected, did not experience attunement or experienced trauma at a young age, connecting with that inner child can help you to heal those wounds. When those wounds aren't identified or healed, we often respond from that wounded place.
