We both continued to read our books, but I couldn't help but glance up at him once in a while.
Something was still making me slightly nervous about him, but I was trying hard to push it to the back of my mind.
It didn't take me long to finish the book I could understand.
Sadly like the last book, a lot of it was torn or scribbled out.
It seemed to be a history book on this church. I was pretty shocked by some of the information I had learned.
Apparently, this place had been around for over a few decades which seemed rather surprising, but considering I just learned demons existed anything could be possible.
This had been a hideout for demons throughout the years and nobody had successfully brought it down. There had been a few invasions but most of them ended with the humans being killed or eaten. Nobody who planned to attack ever made it out alive same with anyone who investigated. Considering how long it's been and that Kyojuro made it out once hopefully he could do it again.
Placing my finished book down I picked up the next one I had brought. Flipping the first page open I squinted trying to read the Latin words. I could only recognize the word demon and that was about it.
This book seemed to be perfectly fine. No scribbles or torn pages. Just lots of Latin that I could not understand.
A small pout tugged at my lips as I looked sadly at the book.
Looks like I'd have to wait to ask Kyojuro.
"Can you not read it?"
I quickly looked up at him and my cheeks turned pink from embarrassment.
"Was it really that obvious?"
He let out a low chuckle before patting the chair beside him.
I tilted my head to the side in confusion.
"Sit I'll read it to you."
My eyes lit up as a smile graced my lips.
I immediately got up from my spot to sit beside him placing the book down for the both of us to see. He moved the book a bit closer to him and rested his head on his hand as he began to glance over it.
"Do you know what this book is about or did you randomly pick it out?"
"Well, I can understand a bit of Latin but not much. I just recognized a word and wanted to see if I could read it.." I mumbled.
"Oh, and what word was that?"
"Daemonium."
His eyes shined for a moment and he turned his attention back to the book.
"That is correct. This is a book on different types of demons and the church. Out of all books in this library to be found, you picked one of the hardest to understand."
I pouted a frown forming on my face as I reached out to grab the book.
"Alright, I'll find another one," I said with disappointment.
Before I could grab the book he snatched it away.
"I never said I couldn't read it."
My smile returned instantly and he moved the book closer to me.
"I'm not sure how much we will be able to get through but I'll read you as much as I can alright?"
I nodded my head happily swinging my feet.
I was beginning to feel a bit more comfortable around him.
Almost completely forgetting Kyojuro's words.
Something deep inside of me was hoping he was another human who also ended up here but at the same time, he seemed too relaxed. Maybe he had just been here for so long that he had gotten really good at hiding it, but I couldn't say for sure.
At the moment I was just happy to have made a new friend in this hell hole.
Time had gone by quickly. A small yawn left my lips as I continued to listen.
We hadn't got too far into the book but I had finally learned the ranks of the demons here. Like in any other place, there were social classes. The lowest of the low were the black-hooded demons those were the ones who had just turned and were still discovering their powers. Most of them didn't make it past black robes and some even downgraded. Some would be taken over by their powers, but if that were to happen they would be killed.
The next rank were those in purple robes. They had better control over their powers. They were able to use them, unlike black robes. They also had more power in this church. They were to help prepare others and sometimes even got to leave the church.
The next were those who wore red robes. They were in close connection with the 'Master' of this church. They were basically his right hands. They were some of the most powerful demons here who had complete control of their power. They were allowed complete freedom and could leave this place as they pleased.
There were still a lot of things we hadn't got to but I was finally able to understand things a bit better. I definitely wanted to avoid all conflict with anyone wearing a red robe. Even the purple robes would be good to avoid.
"Alright, that's enough for the night."
"Night?" I asked letting out a small yawn.
"Yes, we've been reading for most of the day."
My face grew in shock as I looked around.
"Is it really??" I asked looking for some kind of window only to remember there were none.
"Yes, we've been sitting here for hours."
Getting up from my seat I stretched out my arms. I watched as he closed the book before getting up himself.
"Do you think you could read to me more sometime?" I asked a small blush forming on my cheeks.
He nodded his head handing the book back over to me. I hugged it to my chest a small giggle leaving my lips.
"I'll be around here most days at the same time whenever you'd like me to read to you some more. Good night miss."
He turned around and my heart fluttered slightly. I watched as his long hair bounced on his back, his long kimono flowing behind him with each step.
Who was this man...?
