Aileen looked at me, studying me. She didn't seem pleased with my response. But, I wasn't gonna back down. This was one thing I just couldn't do.

"I'm sorry, Aileen, but it's not gonna happen." I replied, making my way into the kitchen to grab a drink.

She appeared beside me. "Did you suddenly forget why I'm here?"

I shook my head, popping the cap off my beer.

"I'm your only chance, Mikayla. If you don't do what I tell you... I can't save you from your fate."

I finally locked eyes with her, backing up a few steps. "Are you threatening me?"

She shook her head. "No, I'm only telling you the truth."

"Fuck the truth. You have no idea what that woman did to me. The pain she caused me. And, most of all, you have no fucking right to ask this of me." I turned on my heel and started heading for my room.

"Mikayla! Just listen to me, I'm trying to save your life!" She yelled.

I spun quickly, throwing my beer bottle in her direction.

It passed right through her, shattering against the wall behind her.

"Nice trick." I replied before heading into my room and slamming the door.

Not that it helped anything.

Aileen appeared behind me, arms folded over her chest. "Why are you acting like such a child?"

I stared her down. "You just don't get it do you? The only reason you're here is because of her... I-I died because of her. And now you want me to forgive her? To pretend like everything's ok?"

A few tears welled up in my eyes. "If this is what it takes, then count me out."

She let out a sigh, dropping her arms to her sides. "Mikayla, please... I don't want to see you die... You have so much to live for. A wife, a family... Do you really wanna throw all that away?"

My breath hitched. "A wife..? You mean Hannah..?"

   She just nodded.

I looked down, sniffling. "I don't want to lose her..."

She led me over to the bed, sitting us down on the edge. "Then let me help you..."

   I nodded slowly. "Ok..."

She wrapped her arm around my shoulder, rubbing my back. "Thank you..."

The next morning, Hanna, Aileen, and I sat at my kitchen table, preparing me to call my mother.

I looked down at my moms number, my finger hovering over the call button. "I don't know if I can do this..."

Hannah took my free hand in hers, gently squeezing it. "It's ok, we're both here for you. Just be strong."

Aileen patted my shoulder, nodding her agreement.

I let out a shaky breath before nodding back, then pressing the call button.

After a few rings, she answered.

"Hello? Mikayla?"

"Hey mom..." I replied.

"Oh, sweetie, it's so good to hear your voice."

I smiled a little. "I've... I've missed you."

"Me to, sweetie."

I wiped at my eyes. "That's actually why I called, would you be able to meet me for lunch later today?"

"Absolutely, just name the time and place." She replied.

"Alright, I'll text you the details."

"Sounds good... I love you, Mikayla. More than you know."

A small smile spread on my lips. "I love you to, mom."

I hung up then, setting my phone on the table.

Aileen smiled at me. "See, that wasn't so bad."

I glared at her. "If you ever bring my mother into this again, I will find a way to end you."

Hannah let out a small laugh, Aileen flashing me a smirk. "Good luck."

I rolled my eyes, sitting back in my chair...

After a few hours, we parted ways with Hannah before heading towards the restaurant I'd be meeting my mother at.

I sat down at our table, Aileen sitting in my mothers seat across from me. Of course she was running late, no surprise there.

Aileen gave me a worried look. "I'm sure she'll be here. She said she'd be."

I shook my head. "Clearly you don't know my mother as well as you'd like to think..."

The minutes ticked by slowly, then an hour. And still no sign of my mother.

I let out a sigh, rubbing my forehead.

"I'm sorry, Mikayla." Aileen said.

I pushed away from the table, standing angrily. "Whatever."

Then, I turned on my heel, seeing my mother standing a few feet in front of me. "Mom..? I can't believe you actually showed up."

She smiled at me, pulling me into a tight hug. "Sorry for being late. The doctors visit ran a little longer than expected."

I sunk into her embrace, suddenly feeling at ease. All the anger and sadness washed away. "It's ok..."

She pulled away then, holding me at arms length. "Good. Now let's order before they boot us out."

I laughed lightly, retaking my seat, my mother taking her seat in front of me.

Aileen stood behind her, giving me a quick wink before vanishing...

After we ordered our food, my mother looked to me. "It's so good to see you, sweetie."

I smiled at her. "You to, mom."

She took my hands from across the table. "I know you've been upset with me and I know it's all my fault... I would like to apologize for what I've put you through. The pain I've caused you... If I could do it all over again, I would've quit that job the minute you were born. I would've given you the life you deserved... That's my biggest regret in life and I'm sorry it's taken me this long to apologize for it..."

I felt a few tears well behind my eyes. "I forgive you, mom..."

And, just like that, the weight of the world was lifted from my shoulders. It felt good to say those words. To completely and sincerely forgive my mother. To finally welcome her back into my life. It was something I didn't realize I needed until now and I only wish I could've figured it out sooner...

After a few hours of catching up, I said my goodbyes and headed home with Aileen.

She stared out the window, humming to herself.

I took in a deep breath, a small smile spreading on my lips. "Aileen?"

   She turned to me. "Yeah?"

I took a quick sideways glance at her, my smile growing. "Thank you..."

She smiled back. "No problem, kid..."
