yesterday, i talked to my friend / both of us were quite honest, and thought that the world should just end /

we were browsing through the world news / just like any other teenager now, we discussed about global issues /

racism, homophobia, misogyny, police brutality and more / all the plights mainstream media chooses to ignore /

we didn't think there is any hope for this world / i mean, it was 2020, the year all mess had unfurled /

it's not like these complications didn't occur before / it's just that we were too young and couldn't deplore /

now we're older and somewhat mature / and now we see that this world is no longer pure /

"i can't breathe," "i can't breathe," he cried / for seven minutes, he struggled, and he still died /

we distrust this world, and so we talked more and more / about the misfortunes and hindrances we abhor /

is this really how our world was supposed to turn out? / leaving this generation in misery and doubt? /

with every news we read about humanity's tears / in our voices and non-existent futures, grew the fears/

and we certainly would've collapsed right then and there / for all of the deaths we read, and the ones we didn't, all of this is so, so unfair /

but then we saw; some of the humans, in whom humanity still pervades / they are screaming for justice and still walking parades /

we realized, slowly and surely, we can survive / we can thrive against this culture built on oppression and towards love we must strive /

the "i can't breathe," reignited and inflamed this revolution / mr floyd, your sacrifice is honorable towards our generation /

for the pain and the fight in your seven minutes, we will breathe / some hope still proceeds, and one day, so will relief /

we will achieve, and we will breathe.

— honestly,
azade
