Theodore's POV

Marco was walking me to second period, which was English taught by Ms. Vaughn. I was excited to see Ava and ask how her first class of the day went. She was so nervous about school, and I knew that once she saw me, she would feel better about the rest of the day.

When we got to the classroom, I immediately noticed Cara sitting at a desk in the second row, without Ava. Rushing to her, I frantically asked, "Where's Ava? Is she okay? Why isn't she here?"

"Teddy, relax," she said, placing her hands on my shoulder and sitting me down at the desk in front of her. She kneeled in front of me and said, "She wasn't feeling well, so your dad came and picked her up. She's at home right now."

The other students were giving us confused looks, but I didn't care. I shouldn't be in school right now. I needed to be at home with Ava making sure that she was okay. Even if she had Dad with her, she still needed me.

"I need to go home," I said as I tried to get up.

Cara pushed me back down into my seat and shook her head. "Teds, Ava is fine. Your dad is with her and taking care of her. You need to finish out the school day. You'll see her when you go home."

Glaring at her, I said, "You can't tell me what to do. I'm calling my dad to come pick me up."

"At least finish half the day," Marco sighed. "You can call your dad at lunch."

"Fine," I said, crossing my arms across my chest.

I wouldn't wait until lunch, but they didn't need to know that.

Once Ms. Vaughn started class, I waited ten minutes before raising my hand.

"Yes, Teddy?" she called.

"May I go to the nurse's office?" I asked. "I'm not feeling well."

"Of course," she said. "Take your things with you. I hope you feel better."

Marco let out a dry laugh, shaking his head. "I should've known better, but I understand. You have to take care of your sister."

Cara had an amused expression on her face as she said, "I'll text or call you tonight to check up on Ava. Okay?"

"Sounds good," I said as I packed my backpack and walked out of the classroom.

"Theodore Russo, you are perfectly fine," Dad said over the phone

"Theodore Russo, you are perfectly fine," Dad said over the phone. "Go back to class right now. You'll see your sister after school."

When I left my class, I went to the nurse's office and called Dad to pick me up, but he was being annoying. Ava needed me, and if he didn't realize that, I would find a way to get home without his help.

"No, Dad. I'm going home," I said in Italian. "Either pick me up or I'll walk home. I know the directions so I won't get lost, but there's a chance I might be kidnapped by one of the Mafia's enemies."
