The first part is taken from the final episode of the series, so dialogue is the same as it is in the anime. Aizawa and Matsuda being the ones to find Light afterward is based on a scene in Relight 1.*
Chapter Summary: Light is proven to be Kira and Matsuda struggles with learning the truth. After shooting Light, Matsuda questions his own actions and wonders if he did the right thing or not.
"Light...why?"
Matsuda dropped to his knees, unable to believe that Light really was Kira, yet unable to ignore the irrefutable proof. They were in the Yellow Box warehouse, and Mikami, who had apparently been helping Light as Kira, had written down all of their names in a Death Note. Thankfully, it was a fake notebook, but Light's name was the only name not written down. Which meant that Light was Kira. Not to mention, Light had officially declared his victory only a few minutes ago. As Aizawa had just told Light, he had pretty much confessed then, even if it was unintentional.
Matsuda was mildly aware of the conversations taking place around him, but he was still in such a state of shock. He felt betrayed, hurt, and most of all, angry. Angry with Light, yes, and also with himself.
Light is Kira, he thought. Light has been Kira all along. Ryuzaki was right. Near was right. Aizawa was right. Why didn't I see it, too?
He found himself lost in thought. Matsuda had known the Yagami family for many years. It was one reason he had believed so unfailingly in Light all this time. He could not imagine that someone he had known for so long had turned out to be this serial killer. Just as unbelievable was the fact that he was the Chief's son.
Chief Yagami. Matsuda had looked up to him and held such great respect for him. Chief Yagami had mentored Matsuda, taught him so much, and never once made him feel like he was an idiot. How could such an honest, moral, and great man as the Chief, have a son who killed thousands of people? And why did it seem like Light didn't even care that his dad was gone? He had been broken up enough when the Chief first died, but after that, it was immediately back to business as usual, and Light never even talked about his father anymore after that.
Thinking about the Chief's death, made Matsuda think back about all the other losses of innocent lives. The FBI agents, Naomi Misora, Watari, Ryuzaki...was Light also responsible for their deaths as well? Matsuda would never have considered that possibility before, but now, it seemed impossible that Light was not somehow accountable for these deaths. More recently, they learned that Mello was dead, and then Takada soon died after that.
Light. It was all Light, Matsuda thought. He killed them all. They're all dead because Light decided they no longer had a right to live.
Matsuda suddenly felt foolish for believing in Light as much as he did. He felt silly for defending him and vouching for him every time someone accused Light of being Kira. The more he thought about this, the more betrayed Matsuda felt. His anger had risen to an incredible height as well.
He was brought back around to his surroundings by the sound of maniacal laughter. Matsuda glanced up to see Light laughing. It was more scary than anything. The evilness underlying the laughter, the crazed expression on Light's face.
Light finally stopped laughing and after a brief pause, he admitted, "That's right. I am Kira."
Even though Matsuda knew it was the truth, somehow to hear Light admit to it so readily, was a bit creepy. Meanwhile, the shame, pain, and anger that Matsuda had been experiencing, had slowly built up inside him.
