Alex came over to my house that weekend, like he does most weekends. I wanted to hang out with him and I also need to tell him something.
I waited for him in the dining room, looking out the tall windows where I can see my street, waiting for him.
He came running to my front porch like he usually did, and before he could ring the doorbell or knock, much less get onto the porch, I opened the doors wide open and he ran straight into my house.
I closed the door behind him and Alex kicked off his boots.
"What do you want to do today?" He asked once he was out of his boots and in his socks.
We walked over to the couch and sat down.
"I have a few things planned," I said. "But I have to tell you something."
He started taking his jacket off and put it on the arm of the couch. His eyebrows furrowed. "What is it?"
I looked at the snow drifting outside in the backyard. Christmas was coming, which meant christmas break was coming.
"Alex, you know how christmas break is really soon?"
"Yeah..."
"I'm, uh, I'm going on vacation." It was hard to say to him. I know how much he will miss me, because I already know I'll miss him so much.
He looked a little sad. "For how long?"
"Two weeks. I'm leaving one week early from Christmas vacation. I'll be back the second week of the vacation. So, I'll miss a week of school. We're going to the Bahamas. I wish I could take you with us..."
"I know." He smiles understandingly. "I understand. That's alright. I just hope that you have fun."
"What will you do when I'm gone?" I asked, concerned.
"Well, the people at school aren't as bad as they used to be, but I'll stay away from them and try not to get into any trouble anyway. I'll try to stay away from my parents. I'll be fine." Something about his tone was weird, and I couldn't put a finger on it. "I'll be missing you."
I smiled at that. "I'll bring you back a souvenir," I said and chuckled dryly.
"You don't have to, but thanks," he replied with a smile. "So what did you want to do today?"
At the reminder of my plans for the afternoon, I smiled excitedly.
"I was thinking we could bake cookies or something! It sounds kind of cheesy and random, but it'll be fun! We can also do something out in the snow. There's so much we can do!"
After that, we started doing some of those things.
But, we had to go to the grocery store first if we were going to be making stuff.
We pulled into the parking lot in my moms car that we borrowed, because my parents were using the other one, then we walked into the store.
We went over to the baking area and got some stuff like flour and icing and chocolate chips. We weren't sure what exactly we were going to bake yet, but we were getting things for everything.
We got milk and butter and eggs and everything else that we'd probably need.
Then we decided that we wanted to make a fort or something. We wouldn't really do anything in the fort, because we don't have the imaginations that little kids have, but we walked past the area with really fuzzy blankets and stuff like that, and Alex decided that he wanted to make me a comfy place for me to read in, because we were reading together one time and he saw how uncomfortable I was in my room. I kept changing my location and my reading position because nothing was working for me, as it usually doesn't.
Alex was cautious about what he bought because he didn't want to spend so much of my money. We've went on shopping trips before, and he used to refuse to spend my money but there's an understanding between us now that Alex can spend my money as long as he wasn't wasting it, and he never did. Whenever he bought something it usually ended up with me in the end anyway. He never really kept anything.
Alex got a few really soft blankets which were on sail, a few nice pillows that were on sail, then he got a few other things to make a fort.
We bought a few more random things then we went back to my house.
It was starting to rain a lot when we got back, so Alex and I randomly started mumbling "rain, rain, go away..."
When we got to my house, we decided that we would make the fort first. There was a big, empty corner in my room where we decided we would put the fort.
I had a shelf a little bit high up on the wall that went into the corner and onto the next wall, a corner shelf, so we thought that would be a perfect place to put a blanket.
We clipped a blanket up on the shelf in a few places, so that it draped over the floor below, where there was space under to make a cozy spot.
We crawled under, and it was surprisingly a pretty place for a fort, thanks to the wide and long shelf. The blanet hung about two metres away from the wall on both corners.
Alex and I got four pillows and lined the walls with them, so that it would be comfier to lay our backs on, then we put a few fuzzy blankets on the floor, with a bean bag chair that we found in the basement.
Then Alex had an amazing idea.
We ran downstairs to the basement and got a box marked in red marker X-MAS LIGHTS. We took the box upstairs, and started clipping them up in random places and stringing them around the top of the fort on the inside.
We were so excited about it, that I fell back somehow and I bonked my head on the wall.
"Are you alright?" Alex asked me looking concerned.
He shifted toward me as me knelt on the ground and he put his hand on my head in a comforting manner. He ran his hand from the top of my head down my hair.
"I'm fine," I said.
"You sure?" He asked.
"Yeah."
He ruffled my hair a little, and I have him a fake annoyed look. Then we got back to building the fort.
We eventually finished stringing the lights around the top, and I could tell that this would be amazing on a dark night.
Alex crawled our of the fort for a moment to plug in the lights, and when he did I gasped.
"Is it really that pretty?" He called from out of the fort.
"Yeah! Come see!"
He came crawling in, and he sat beside me. We both looked up at our art work.
"It is pretty cool," he admitted.
I knit my eyebrows. "It's more than that." I though about it for a moment. "It's..."
"...Magical?" He guessed.
"Yeah," I replied. "I guess you could say that. It is pretty magical. Feels that way, too."
We admired the fort for a few more moments, then I realized that his hand was touching mine. I looked down at my hand and saw that the sides of our hands were touching.
I looked up to the side of his face for a second, then I looked up at the lights.
Things did feel very magical.
It was just the luck, really. Alex was all alone, and he found me. I never had any real friends, and I found him. We both have terrible back stories, but we will always have each other. We always will, because I promised to never leave him, and I know he would never leave me. We need each other. It was like magic the way that things work out like that.
We stayed in there admiring the place for a few more minutes, then we crawled out and headed downstairs to start making a chocolate cake.
We measured and mixed over and over again, then we put the cake mix in a whatchamacallit cake pan thingie and put it in the oven. We didn't know the scientific terms for a lot of utensils we were using, we called them things like 'measure thingie' and 'stir mabob' but we still knew what we were doing.
The cake that we made had to be in the oven for quite a while, so we decided that we would clean up while we were waiting. I was getting tired. It was pretty late, too.
The oven beeped after we cleaned up, letting us know that our cake was ready to eat. The cake aura filled the house for almost the whole time that the cake was in there, tempting me to open up the oven, dug my hands in and eat it not fully cooked.
We opened up the oven, and a wave of heat whacked us in the faces. It also smelt very delicious.
Right after we set the cake on the counter, the power went out. I couldn't see anything.
"Wow," I said in the darkness as the rain pounded on the windows. "We were lucky that the cake finished before the blackout."
I didn't get an answer. "Alex?"
I felt beside me where Alex could be, but he wasn't there.
"Alex?!" I called out.
I heard footsteps storming up the stairs, then my text tone went off in my pocket.
I got my phone and read the text, and it was from Alex. It said: Come find me >;)
I typed in a reply:
Blackout hide and seek? You're on! >:)
I could barely see anything, but I knew my house well, so I was able to navigate myself around in the darkness. The problem was, Alex also knew my house pretty well. He could be anywhere.
I yawned, still being tired, the darkness not helping at all, and I climbed up the stairs, remembering hearing the loud footsteps there.
I checked the bathroom first, but everywhere I felt, he wasn't there.
I checked the office, and he wasn't there either.
I then thought he would probably be in my room in the closet or something, maybe squeezed under my bed, so I walked in.
"Alexxxx," I said. "You in here?"
I first felt around my bed (I don't know why I thought he would be there) and around the corners of my room, but he wasn't there. I opened the closet, but I didn't feel him there either. I checked under the fort, but it was all air. I was about to plug in the christmas lights for some light, but stupid me, the powers out.
I stepped away from the fort.
Then I felt something behind me. It felt close. I took one step forward, then turned around. I slowly pushed my hands out infront of me, and sure enough, there was a warm chest under my palms.
I started to move my hands upward to touch his face playfully, but he disappeared.
I lunged infront of me, hoping I would catch him, but all I cought was air.
Then from behind me, he jumped at me, tightly wrapping his hands deathly tight around me.
"Caught you," Alex's voice whispered in my ear as he bumped into me, then we crashed down and tumbled sideways into the fort.
Alex was so warm, the fort was so cozy, and I was so tired. Even though that jump scare and fall woke me up a little, I quickly got tired again.
I didn't move, because I didn't want to. I just stayed there in Alex's arms, the last thing I remember hearing being "I know you're tired. You can sleep," being whispered into my ear.
Then I started drifting off to sleep.
