Mason awoke feeling cold, finding his sparse bedding flung alongside him. Blinking, he looked to his left side, finding a mellow, dim light shining on a pile of rubble from above in the distance.

He had fallen asleep in the dark ruins of a subway tunnel. Any lights had went out long ago, electricity disappeared similarly to humanity. Hiding in subterranean tunnels were the remnants of mankind, avoiding the varying levels of radiation that now plagued the forgotten cities on the surface.

Mason gathered his blanket and shouldered his pack. He loaded and hoisted his gun, then stood up straight and further inspected his surroundings. There was a large hole in the roof of the tunnel in front, which was where the earlier moonlight filtered through. The rift in the tunnel produced the chill that awoke him. Cement walls, infested with moss and fungi. Rusty train tracks and random trash populated the ground of the silent tunnels. Snuffing out the remains of his fire by boot, Mason began his pace.
