Inside of a bank vault, Hydra agents fix Bucky's metal arm. As they do he has a brief flashback of his old life before Hydra.
"Sergeant Barnes..." Zola says.
He flashes back to falling off of the train at the edge of a mountain, seeing Anne and Steve's horrified faces.
"Bucky!" Steve calls out.
"NO!" Anne shrieks.
"The procedure has already started."
Zola and another Hydra agent amputate his left arm and replace it with a metal arm.
"You are to be the new fist of HYDRA." He says to him. "Put him in ice."
Bucky is frozen.
He flashes to sitting in Anne's bedroom that night, confessing his love for her and the kiss.
He becomes angry and knocks over the Hydra agent fixing his arm. Guns are drawn and point at him. Pierce enters the vault Bucky is being held in.
"Sir, he's...he's unstable." A Scientist warns.
He ignores him and walks to Bucky.
"Mission report." He says.
No reply.
"Mission report, now."
No reply again. He strikes him hard across the face.
"Those two on the bridge." Bucky says. " I knew them."
"You met them earlier this week on another assignment." Pierce lies.
"I knew them." Bucky says. "I got this... feeling when I saw the girl."
"Your work has been a gift to mankind. You shaped the century, and I need you to do it one more time. Society is at a tipping point between order and chaos. Tomorrow morning we're gonna give it a push. But, if you don't do your part, I can't do mine, and HYDRA can't give the world the freedom it deserves." Pierce says attempting to convince him.
"But I knew them."
Pierce turns to the scientists.
"Prep him." He says.
"He's been out of cryo-freeze too long." The scientist says.
"Then wipe him and start over." He says and turns to leave the room.
The scientists strap Bucky to his chair, place a teeth shield in his mouth and begin the process of wiping his brain. Bucky screams in pain.
He knew them.
