Melody

“Hey, could I have a huge black coffee and whatever is your most popular breakfast” I asked the skinny teenage boy behind the bar.

“Coming right up, I hope you like blueberry pancakes” he answered.

Pancakes, it had been ages since I had any. I drifted of in my thoughts when suddenly I felt a soft tap on my shoulder.

“You new in town?” a pretty short guy, probably shorter than me, with blonde brown hair and the most amazing blue eyes said.

“What makes you think that” I asked with an as uninterested voice I could possibly make.

“Well a face, or legs for that matter, like that I would’ve remembered seeing around” he said in a flirtatious voice.

God I wanted to flirt back, but I was starting over here. No guys before I got settled, no heartbreaks that got me running before I even had gotten attached to the place.

“Not interested” I said looking all calm, but inside I was kicking myself.

“Why is that so, if I may ask” he asked with a smile, could he please stop smiling like that!

“I’m a lesbian and my girlfriend would kick your ass,” I said ironically, but not too sarcastically so he first dared to laugh after I had rolled my eyes at him.

“A name then could I at least get that?”

“It's Melody, but your questions are up, my breakfast is here and I would love to eat that in peace, please”

“I’m on my way already, but here incase you need a very handsome guy to guide you around town, Melody” he said and handed me a napkin with his number and name and walked off.

Hunter, I must say that the name fit him. And that smile… Okay, time to focus; breakfasts almost done, finding a job, haven’t even started.

“Hey! Do you know any places here in town that are looking for waitresses” I called out to the teenage boy.

“Actually I think we’re hiring, if you have a resume I could just hand that and your number to my boss when he gets in later today” he said with a smile.

“That would be so sweet of you” I said and smiled even bigger than him and left my resume along with the cash for the breakfast on the bar counter.

After breakfast I decided to just stroll around town, the sun was shining and every now and then a warm summer breeze passed by. I saw college kids and thought about what my life could’ve been like. If my father hadn’t been an abusive alcoholic and I’d know my mother, maybe I too would’ve been home for a few weeks over the summer like any other 20 year old. Maybe I’d have a boyfriend who unlike all the ones I’d had during the four years I’ve lived alone, cared for me. One who’d come pick me up for dates and take me to meet his parents. I was daydreaming again and I knew all to well that that never did me any good. No all it ever did was making me believe that the next guy that hit on me was the one, the one I’d been searching for and thought I deserved. I decided to throw the napkin with Hunter’s number on away, before I did something stupid.
