The whole day I hadn’t been able to get her off my mind. Melody, even the name was perfect, I could easily write that into a song. There was just one thing, she hadn’t seemed that into me and I couldn’t figure out why. She hadn’t even called yet! I had ditched my friends tonight just to wait for her call but she sure as hell wasn’t in a rush. I decided to stop obsessing and walked towards the kitchen. Yesterday’s takeout leftovers were all I had in the fridge so that was what I was having tonight. The pizza couldn’t be bad already but it tasted awful so I just threw it away. To tired to get anything else to eat I sat down on my bed with my guitar. But just like yesterday and the day before that I had nothing to write about, nothing important anyway. Instead I just sang Josh Turner’s Why Don’t We Just Dance. After that I played through a couple more songs but I soon got bored. It had been like this for weeks now, every time I picked up an instrument I couldn’t seem to come up with anything creative. I’d been writing songs since I was 6, even though they didn’t have much meaning to them I had still been able to write something. With a sigh I decided to sleep. I really needed sleep after a week’s reckless partying and there wasn’t much for me to do anyway.

Melody

Even though I woke before the alarm went off I felt rested and couldn’t wait to start my day. On my way to the diner I passed a Starbucks and ran in to get myself a coffee and bagel to go. It was still early and most of the city was sleeping which suited me perfectly. It allowed me walk to work without any noise except for the birdsong. When I was just a block away from the diner I realized I was a half hour early. I could only hope the teenage boy from yesterday was already there since I didn’t have any keys. I turned out to be lucky, the diner door was unlocked and the kid was having breakfast at the bar. He turned around when the door closed behind me and smiled.

“Hey! Melody right?” he asked with his mouth full with scrambled eggs. Before I got the chance to answer he held out one hand to introduce himself.

“Kyle” he said after swallowing the scrambled eggs.

“Nice seeing you again, I could start cleaning the tables if you could just tell me where to find a cloth” I said.

“There should be a few under the sink in the kitchen” Kyle said and pointed.

“Oh and when you’re out there, would you mind turning the radio on?” He called after me.

Instead of answering I just turned it on maxed out the volume when I heard Rodney Atkins’ Take A Back road. I danced out of the kitchen and started singing loudly as I continued dancing around the tables wiping them clean. Behind me Kyle started laughing.

“Did your parents name you Melody to compensate for you being completely tone-deaf?” He laughed.

“Oh ain’t you a funny one!” I said laughing and threw the cloth at him.

I really liked Kyle; he was young probably around 16, laughed a lot and the only thing he seemed worried about was whether his father would notice that he had used his truck last night on a date. We had fun working together and time passed by rather quickly. Just like that the day had passed by and we were closing in an hour. I had almost made it through the first day at the diner when the little bell at door rang and a familiar blonde guy walked in. When his eyes met mine a smile appeared on his face.
