Kaylah Dawson

11:59 pm

"Question one," The voice began. "When is Alyssa's birthday?"

The question seemed too easy, but I wasn't gonna complain. "29th of July." I replied immediately. I was one step closer to saving my sister, just two more questions, I can do this.

"Well done, I didn't even have to count, then again, if you hadn't known that, you would have had a real issue." This time I was sure of the enjoyment in the voice, and it did nothing other than fuel my anger. "Question two, what's your sister's address?"

This is stupid.

"Five...four..."

The owner of the voice was literally at Alyssa's house, so they must know her fucking addy. These questions clearly aren't for their benefit, they really are just playing some sick game - treating this like some sort of fucked up quiz show.

"Three.."

"Number 4 Swarthmore drive." I spat out, getting sick of this 'game'.

Why is someone doing this?

"Took you long enough, cutting it fine don't you think? Anyways, I'm sure you're as excited as I am for the final question, so why postpone the grand finale any longer."

I was quickly getting sick of the condescending way this person was speaking to me - but I have bigger things to worry about than that right now.

"Question 3, how many pairs of shoes does Alyssa own?"

WHAT. This has to be a joke.

"Five...four..."

"How the fuck should I know that?! I don't even know how many I own, let alone Alyssa!"

"...three..."

My throat began to get tight as the voice's words replayed in my head.

"For both of your sakes, I wouldn't be wrong."

I began choking on the thick ball of fear that was building back up inside me."I DON'T KNOW! No one knows that sort of stuff about people!" I yelled, exasperated by the situation, the voice's oddly calm manner didn't help towards my nerves either.

"...two..."

Frantically wringing my hands, I watched the screen helplessly, shaking with anxiety and defeat. "I-I.."

"...and one. Ah what a shame, you were doing so well too." The voice had a new, victorious tone laced as they spoke, as if this was their hopes all along.

For the first time since the game started I took a chance to look at Alyssa, her brown eyes filled with terror and tears, her lips - usually smiling - cut and drooping, she was broken, and I felt like it was all my fault.

"You asked me what happens if you got one wrong," The voice spoke out, causing my gaze to break from Alyssa.

"Well here's your answer, Kaylah."
