Blue lights illuminated Alyssa's house, and teams of LAPD officers swarmed around the street, monitoring the public and preserving the crime scene. The voice and it's owner were long gone, only the consequences of their actions remained.
A white and black car pulled up outside the house, and two detectives stepped out - one tall and thin, the other short and chubby. Quite the duo.
The pair ducked under the yellow tape that marked the authorized area from the public area, before quickly making their way into the house.
Inside, there seemed to be even more going on than outside. Forensics dressed in white suits and gloves were busy inspecting every corner of Alyssa's house, while the LAPD sergeant stood nearby, observing the mess from a distance.
"So what do we have here?" The tall detective, who was known as Agent Reid, asked as the pair reached close enough to the sergeant.
Turning his attention to the two men, the sergeant replied, "Honestly, I'm not sure. All I do know for sure is that this case is one for the UVC."
"What do you mean? How do you know this case is for violent crimes?" The chubby detective, who was known as Agent Garcia, questioned, joining the conversation.
"You haven't been told? The victim's sister was forced to play some messed up game with the killer, with the victim's life on the line." The sergeant spoke, flinching slightly as he thought of the trauma the situation held.
"A game?" The detectives repeated in unision - shock laced through their words.
"Yeah. Some question game on videocall, she got one question wrong and was fored to watch the killer mutilate her sister."
"She watched..." Agent Reid began, but trailed of in disbelief.
"It's fucked up, I know. But if you think the story is bad - you should see the outcome." The sergeant grimaced, pointing in the direction of the living area.
As the group walked into the room the first thing they saw was the agressively disfigured body, the victim. Alyssa.
Both detectives gasped, in all their years they hadn't seen anything quite so horrific, and they had seen some pretty brutal things in their line of work.
Alyssa had been stripped down to her underwear and tied to a wooden chair by her arms and legs, her head hanging limply over her lifeless body.
But the thing that stood out the most to the detectives wasn't the inhumane way she had been tied up, or the way she was still sat up right in the chair. No, the thing that stood out the most was the countless number of glass shards that were shoved deep into the flesh of Alyssa's face, completely deforming it beyond recognition. Where blood had once gushed from her face, bright red blood clots had now formed, matching the dried stains on the grey carpet and surrounding furniture.
Written on her bare chest, in her own blood, was a message left for the unit. It read - "Dear UVC, I hope you enjoy this investigation as much as I enjoyed making it for you, yours sincerely, The Caller."
"Wow, it literally had UVC written all over it." Agent Garcia stated almost playfully, earning a nudge in the side from his taller partner, except the height difference caused the hit to land on his head instead.
"Hey!"
"Anyways, like I said, the case is seriously fucked up." The sergeant said, choosing to ignore the slightly childish behaviour of the two detectives.
Regaining his posture, Agent Reid stepped forward to face the sergeant, "So the killer stabbed her in the face with all that glass?"
The sergeant opened his mouth to reply, but a new voice from behind them interrupted before he could speak. "Incorrect."
The group turned to face the direction the voice had come from, their eyes meeting a short woman with glasses, and long black hair pulled up into a tight ponytail.
"Oh, this is our lead crime scene investigator on the case." The sergeant introduced sheepishly, as if he had forgotten.
"Yes sergeant, I think as detectives they had figured that much out - they hardly thought I was just a random woman who had just walked into a guarded crime scene." The crime scene investigator said, a mocking tone laced through her voice. "Anyways, as I was saying, you are incorrect."
"How so?" Agent Reid asked, intruiged by this smart, assertive woman.
"If you only look at the larger peices of glass," She began, pointing to the shards that had impaled around Alyssa's eye socket, cheeks and chin. ", you would be right to assume the killer had stabbed her one by one into her face. Although they would have to have been very strong as some shards even penetrated the victims bones, so this conclusion is already unlikely." Looking up to make sure she still had the boys' attention, she continued, "But when you observe closer, you can see even more, much smaller peices of glass wedged into various places on the victim's face."
"So..what does that mean, the smaller peices?" Agent Garcia asked, hoping the other two men were just as confused as he was.
"The size of some of these smaller peices make it no less than impossible for someone to have stabbed it into her face, they're nothing more than residue, broken off from the impact of the larger peices of glass."
The detectives nodded in understanding, shivers going up their spine as they fully grasped the violent nature of this situation, the unbearable pain the victim must have been through, and the way she probably stopped wishing to be saved and prayed for death to take hold of her.
The sergeant cleared his throat, before posing a question in an attemt to reach the same understanding the two detectives had. "So, what you're saying is..." He began, hoping someone would finish of his sentence.
To his appreciation, the crime scene investigator finish his sentence. "What I'm saying is, the killer didn't force glass into her face," She began, turning to look at him, a serious look on her face. "The killer forced her face down onto the glass."
