"Wake up, nerd. Did you know that the word Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis the longest English word written in the English dictionary? It's commonly referred to as a lung disease."
Zak groaned at how Techno was practically his human alarm clock.
"How did you even pronounce that from memory?" He groaned, "Five more minutes, pleaseee?"
"No. You have work in two minutes."
Zak shot up at that, quickly getting out of bed.
"Two minutes?!"
"Just kidding," Techno joked, "You've got an hour."
Zak sighed, a smile forming on his face at the other's teasing.
"Now, cmon, I made you coffee."
It was always the little things Zak appreciated, and Techno knew that. The little sticky notes plastered onto the mirror, saying, "You're doing great!" Making each other tea or coffee. Oh, there was also Zak trying to make pancakes for Techno's birthday and almost burning the house down— But that was for another day. It's the thought that counted, surely, right?
Zak gave him a small smile, walking to the kitchen they had. As Techno had said, there was a steaming cup of coffee neatly laid on the table, which had always shined clean if Techno had any say in it.
"Thanks," He murmured thoughtfully, taking the cup and taking a brief drink from it, "How'd you sleep?"
"Rather well, thank you. How about you?"
"Good."
"You know," Techno said, "The proper response to that would be well. Good is used to describe what you are at something. For instance, being good at drawing. Well is used to describe how you feel."
"You tell me this every morning," Zak whined, "How many times do I have to tell you? I'm good at being well."
Techno chuckled, shaking his head.
"Sometimes I wonder how I ended up dating you."
"Well, let's go back to high school," Zak joked, and really, it did start off as a joke. Neither of them really expected to reminisce about memories this morning, especially when they have exactly 59 minutes to get to their jobs. But, somehow, they ended up re-capping how they met. In all honesty, it was kind of funny, yet nostalgic and nice to talk about.
"I remember sitting in my room doing homework, thinking, how the hell am I gonna do this? When your mom walked up to me. She handed me forty dollars and told me to befriend you right now or else she would throw me out a window," Zak began, very smug about his story telling skills, moving onto the next plan, lie about half of it to make it funnier.
"She didn't actually say that, did she?"
"No, but I wish she would have. That would have been hilarious."
Techno rolled his eyes, grinning and loosening his hold on the cup of coffee he had.
"You just sort of walked up to me. I was surprised— You never made an attempt to talk to me beforehand."
"Because you called me an unintelligent blobfish!" Zak argued, very serious about this until Techno just started laughing.
"You almost got orange juice on my dictionary, can you blame me?"
"Yes, absolutely. I was casually eating an orange and you snatch up that dictionary like it's your firstborn child!"
By that point, both of them had amused grins on their faces.
"I think that, when you didn't stop trying to interact with me even when I was harsh, I realized maybe you really did want to be my friend," Techno hummed, "So that's why I progressively at least tried to keep up a conversation at some point."
Zak gave a small smile.
"I'm pretty sure the day I realized I liked you was in the middle of a Mcdonalds. Pathetic, right?" Zak chuckled, "You were reciting the dictionary definition to elucidate, and I took some time to think. I knew I saw you more than a friend."
Techno chuckled.
"I'd have to say I knew I liked you when you told me you loved me. It was platonic at the time, but as much as I didn't show it, I was embarrassed. I kind of took note of the fact I didn't want it to be simply friendship."
Zak felt his face flush at that. He would never get over talking about how he felt about Techno, and vice versa. It was always endearing, and something really special for him. Special to understand how and why they both were absolutely infatuated with each other.
Oh, it was also fluster-inducing. But he could put up with embarrassment for the time being, that wasn't much of a problem.
"Then, my mother somehow came to the conclusion one of us liked each other. At that point, I guess she wasn't wrong," He gave a light laugh, "I probably overreacted when she told me she paid you to talk to me. It was a heat in the moment kind of thing, yknow?"
Zak shook his head.
"No. Your reaction was completely justified— You couldn't be sure if anything we ever did was genuine. I can't imagine what I would have done if I was in your position, but I know for a fact you handled it better than I could."
Techno gave a small shrug.
"I was not about to end the friendship without getting any kind of closure," Zak proceeded, "So I remember talking to you about it. It was pretty brief, but when you partially forgave me I was ecstatic. When we started talking without your mother knowing, you know, thinking back on it, I probably acted like some undercover spy on a mission," He wheezed.
Techno gave an amused grin at that, clearly unable to disagree.
"Zak, remember when we tried to kiss in the middle of the library? To be honest, I think the librarian was more pissed than my mom," He joked.
Zak laughed.
"That's completely fair."
"Well, anyways, my dad was able to convince my mom that being gay wasn't as bad as she was making it out to be," Techno resumed, "Honestly, I can still remember the genuine talk we had after that. She allowed us to talk without constantly hunting us down."
"That was nice," Zak teased, "I proceeded to have a crisis about what we were when you told me you wouldn't mind dating. And, no one in their right mind would refuse that!"
"No one in their right mind invites their partner to a skating rink when they don't know how to skate, either," Techno joked.
"Hey, you said you'd go to prom with me, so it's okay because it was worth it."
Techno snickered, picking up his cup of coffee and taking a small drink of it.
"Prom was fun. Despite that one homophobic kid, dancing and humming along to those songs they played is something that won't soon leave my mind."
"I agree. I had a fun time, too," Zak grinned, "And then, we literally graduated! Techno, that was exciting as fuck!"
"It was," Techno chuckled.
"And, so... now we're old," Zak sighed, shaking his head and raising his cup of coffee, carefully swinging it around so it wouldn't spill, "Recapping how we met was fun, but now we've gotta go to work."
Techno bit back a laugh, a genuine smile on his face as he stood up, leaning in and giving Zak a light kiss.
"In that case, I'll be heading to work. I'll see you later. Love you, darling."
"Love you too, sweet pea," Zak giggled.
"Please never unironically call me that again." Techno laughed, shaking his head. Zak would never learn.
"Fine, honey," Zak huffed, "Have a good day. I love you."
As Techno walked out the door, Zak sighed, the freshly made scent of coffee still lingering in his nose. He didn't know how he got this lucky.
They were both content.
They were both alright.
And, hey. Things really do get better.
Sometimes? You just have to wait.
