Months passed, and things had, mostly gone back to normal. But Lydia's psychic abilities had remained. Gone was her passing out and feeling faint. She was used to her psychic abilities acting up whenever possible. To the point where she started hearing voices and seeing shadows at random points at school.
The barrier between the living world and the Netherworld now acted as a sort of way for the recently deceased to travel to and from it and pay occasional visits to their living relatives within the living world. And, despite most of the living population still being unable to see their deceased relatives/ancestors, there was one thing that the Maitland-Deetz family knew and that was that, sooner or later, they were going to help find a way for that to happen. But until then, it was what it was.
Lydia returned to her house from school one cloudy afternoon a few short weeks before it let out, setting her backpack down on the kitchen island before grabbing out her homework and making her way upstairs to the attic.
She knocked on its door a few times and stood back as she waited.
Surprisingly, although Lydia was used to either one of the Maitlands opening the attic door for her, this time, it was her dead mom who did that. Regardless, Lydia made her way into the attic and moved directly to its center where Adam and Barbara were sat on their couch and chatting. They looked up and towards Lydia and Emily, motioning both of the females towards them.
They made their way towards the couch, Lydia sitting beside Barbara whilst Emily sat down beside Adam.
"How was school, Lydia?" Barbara asked, looking over towards and putting an arm around the teenager's shoulder. "Homework?"
"Yeah. But it can wait," Lydia replied. "Mind if I go out to the roof for some time?"
"Young lady!" Barbara chided with a laugh as the teenager stood up and began to make her way over towards the window that led out to the roof. "It's going to thunderstorm soon."
Lydia turned on her heel to face all three ghosts. "So?"
Emily moved to sit herself down in between Adam and Barbara, putting a hand on Barbara's shoulder. "Just let her do it, Barbara. She and I went out in thunderstorms all the time when she was a child. I can still picture in my mind the look on Charles' face every single time she and I came home soaking wet."
Barbara laughed. "You never let him force you guys to change clothes, did you?"
"No, he tried. Lydia and I just refused because we wanted to."
Again, Barbara laughed. But before she could say anything, Lydia's voice was heard.
"Guys, it's thundering. Wanna come outside with me!" Lydia shouted out towards all three of the ghosts, now standing over by the window leading out to the house's roof and glancing over in their direction. "There's something that I wanna try."
There was no need to answer. At least in Emily's case. Emily immediately stood up, joining Lydia by the window. Adam and Barbara, on the other hand, took a little more time to come to a decision. Eventually, though, Adam and Barbara stood up as well and headed outside onto the roof just as a large bolt of lightning struck the ground over by the house and the loud boom of thunder was heard overhead.
