Math class was after homeroom and we had a huge test, of course I didn't study though because I was too busy taking care of my dad who was drunk. Thankfully I'm one of the smartest grade ten's there so I wasn't worried. When we arrived, the desks were all separated so me and Brooklyn couldn't be beside each other.
In just ten minutes, I was already done with my test, but I could see Brooklyn from across the room was still struggling on every question. Knowing that I had good grades in everything I do, I crumpled up my test and threw it across the room to Brooklyn. It landed on her desk and she smiled at me and mouthed the words "thank you".
I knew I shouldn't get in trouble for this because I saw a couple of girls like Jessica and Maria passing notes about who knows what and Mr Gaulle hasn't yet got them in trouble. I could fail, but I believe helping my friends pass is more important than me.
We were only in the third period when it was time for us to transition into Religion class, and our teacher Mrs Sprouse was talking about the meaning of Friendship. She asked us to write a paragraph about what we would do if we had to sacrifice our life for our friend or a family member. I wrote the school newspaper so writing was one of my specialties, and I could tell it was one of Brooklyn's specialties too because she was already done.
It was all peaceful and quiet until we heard an ear splitting sound, it was the fire alarm! I looked at Brooklyn who was having a panic attack and I ran towards her and grabbed her arm and pulled her outside. We saw teachers running to the gymnasium burning in fire while there were seventh graders stuck under piles of wood, the firefighters were trying to hustle all the teachers out and all we could see was smoke, and all we could hear was the sharp screams of students.
I finally made it outside but I noticed that Brooklyn wasn't holding my hand anymore. My eyes widened as she was still inside and I began to sprint to the front doors. The firefighters saw me and they pushed me back and told me to go back in line with the others. I begged and pleaded and shouted at them and said, "YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND,MY FRIEND IS IN THERE AND YOUR NOT DOING ANYTHING TO SAVE HER"! The firefighters were about to escort me back but I wasn't having it, so I kicked them in their kneecaps and managed to escape their arms and rush inside to find Brooklyn.
I could feel the smoke entering my lungs as I yelled for her name, "BROOKLYN,BROOKLYN WHERE ARE YOU". Then suddenly I heard coughing and I followed it and it led me to the gym where I saw Brooklyn trying to lift up the wood to save the innocent seventh grade students.
"Come on Brooklyn, you have ash on your face and you look like you're gonna pass out, We need to get you outside now" I pleaded with her. "No, I'm s-sorry L-Lucas I need to save them, the seventh graders I need to save them" she replied out of breath. There were no teachers there so I helped her.
We managed to free about twelve students and there was one more. I went to free the little boy, until Brooklyn shoved me away and took my place."Brooklyn, why did you-" but before I could finish my sentence, a giant wooden plank fell from the roof and fell on top of her. "I'm sorry Lucas," Brooklyn said breathlessly. " Why are you saying sorry, you saved me, thank you", I said.
Brooklyn touched my face gently and told me seven words that touched my heart, "I would do anything for a friend" she said just as her eyes fluttered shut. A few moments later the firefighters finally put out the fire and nothing but the gym was damaged.
I carried Brooklyn to the nurses office as she was seriously hurt, and needed some help. She looked so peaceful as she slept, but when we got to the nurse she told me that she had a broken rib and that she should wake up in a bit.
