The wind was going to be the death of him, if his arm didn't fall off first. It was cold and bit through the thin tunic and trousers the Huns had left him in. Ping had fought his way East from the camp the group had set up, only stopping for short bursts to rest himself and the stallion he had stolen.

He knelt down next to a creek and feverishly gulped down a few handfuls of clear water. Licking his chapped lips and shivering, he surveyed back West for any sign of Mushu. The small dragon had not returned yet, and Ping—against his better judgement—was worried.

Even though his guardian had made it clear that his affections were foolish, Mushu had been with him since the first day he started this mess. And though his advice was blunt and calloused, he did save Ping from the Huns.

Another shiver overtook Ping, and it wasn't from the cold. Right as he has fled, the small lizard had suddenly become a huge, glittering beast. It had been the second time Ping had glimpsed Mushu's giant form and he wasn't sure he was eager to see it again. He could still feel the coiled scales pinning him against the wooden barn wall.

Pinned against the barn wall…

An unbidden memory of eager lips and warm breath and strong shoulders flooded his mind and his ears burned. Shang. Ping felt a knot forming in his stomach and a lump fly into his throat. Was Shang even alive? Ping knew there was a chance that his captain was dead, yet if he accepted such a thing…he felt what little strength he had drain out of him at the thought.

I have to keep going.

He would return to Rin Village. He would find his captain, dead or alive, and join him.
