Hanako gently pushed the metal gate open, greeted by the pink blossoms of the sakura tree that sat in her back garden. Some ashes of the cigarette that found it's fate laying in the bushes somewhere rested on her chest. She took a mental note to check everyday before brushing it off. She retrieved a lavendar smelling body mist from her backpack and sprayed a little on herself to conceal the smokey smell of burnt tobacco. She made her way to the back door and walked into the kitchen.
Her mother came her way from the living room, where Hanako swore she heard crying. She cocked a confused eyebrow, her protective senses kicking in. "What's going on?" She shot her annoyed mother a look, following the sniffling sounds to the seating area, where her little brother sat on the couch. His eyes were glossy, lips swollen and red, probably from biting down on them to keep his sobs concealed.
A frustrated sigh emitted from the hallway that her mother followed the girl into. She stood in the doorway with her arms crossed, a nasty look in her eyes as her gaze fell upon the two kids.
When Hanako looked up and crossed eyes with her mother, she felt her blood boil. "What the fuck did you do?" She asked, teeth gritted and eyebrows knitted into a puzzled and pissed frown.
"He looks too much like his father." She stated, eyeing the boy on the couch.
The white haired girl fell silent for a moment, contemplating about wether she heard her mothers words right or not. "He looks too much like dad?" She asked, trying to confirm the statement.
The woman gave her a simple and kurt nod. She looked arrogant, self-absorbed and egoistical. Her chin held up high and eyebrows slightly raised in an unimpressed manner.
Hanako's fists clenched. "And what the fuck is your problem with that?" She spat, her wings hung stiff behind her back.
Her mother used one of her matching bright wings to wave the question away, not bothered to answer her daughter. She turned on her heels and made her way upstairs.
The girl took a deep breath in, calming herself down and taking place beside her little brother on the sofa. "You okay, Ken? Tell me what happened, little man." She said, her voice soft as she wrapped her arms around the boy.
The boy sniffled, wiping his tears away and burying his face into his sisters neck. "Am i ugly?" he whispered, his voice meek and fragile as he spoke.
Hanako's expression fell. How could a mother ever make her child feel this way? He was supposed to be happy and cheerful, playing with his friends outside. "No, no, you're not, Kenji." She shook her head, sighing and continuing to speak; "You're a very handsome little man, okay? You probably have, like, tons of girls secretly drooling over you." Hanako chuckled, looking down at the boy in her arms.
He sighed, breaking away from the hug. "Probably not."
His sister frowned, her hand resting atop of Kenji's head. "Listen, Ken, mom's just..." Hanako bit her lip, looking for the right words to say. "She's just not having her day. You shouldn't listen to her, she probably didn't even mean-.."
"Stop." He cut her off. "You always bite your lip when you lie. Please don't lie to me, Hana." He looked down. "Do i look like dad?" He asked, frowning as he fiddled with the hem of his shirt.
Hanako sighed sadly, she felt bad that she tried to lie to him. He was only nine years old, but he was damn sharp and never failed to notice anything that gave her away with her behavior. "I'm sorry, i'll be honest with you, 'kay?" she said, her face resting in her hands. "You do look like dad, but that's not a bad thing. You aren't him. you're nothing like that fuckig bastard." Her hand ran over the fabric that covered her scar.
