Shit!! I screamed internally as I watched Talon walk through the door with his usual entourage of miscreants. Why in hell was he here and what did he want now? Wait! Do you have to ask that? my internal voice chuckled. I knew what he wanted. He wasn't going to get it though. Since I was about eighteen he has been after me to be his "Mate". And it didn't matter how many times I said no or refrained from going to an outing with friends, he still didn't get it.

 I. WAS. NEVER. GOING. TO. BE. HIS!!

I got up slowly from my chair and moved from behind the large granite desk to stand in front of it. I stood my ground just beside it and braced my palm on its surface. "Morning. Welcome to Markstien Enterprises. Do you have an appointment?" I said in the most professional voice I could muster without adding the disdain that I felt. Talon looked me over with hunger in his eyes as he stalked closer. "Well isn't this the most unexpected surprise?" I rolled my eyes and snorted in anger as he walked even closer. Rubbing his palm down his chin as he took in every inch of me. " Doubt it's unexpected to you Talon. With your uncanny ways of finding out exactly where I am going to be on any given day. It's quite stalker-ish and fucking annoying." I retorted and sidestepped his attempt at touching me. I fumed as I backed away to create some distance between him and me.

"Well you see Violet, I need to keep an eye on my prize." He licked his lips and took another step forward grabbing my arm so I couldn't retreat any further. I gasped at the force of his hand on my elbow. He chuckled and moved in closer "You smell so delectable" he took an exaggerated sniff in my direction "I Will Never. Be. Your. Prize!!" I snapped "And I don't know how many times I have to repeat myself until that gets through your thick, spacious head." it was at that comment his temper rose. His face changed and his eyes flashed obsidian. He tightened his grip on my arm and then behind me I heard Amber squeak. That was what reverted Talon's attention from me to her behind the desk. Amber was looking towards Mathius as he still stood in the doorway but now had moved from leaning casually against the frame to domineering the space with his arms folded in front of him.

"Is there a problem here?" Mathius barked. Which made me jump a little seeing as he hadn't interfered so far. Talon noticed and growled slightly looking over me to where the alpha was standing. "None of your concern Alpha Derek, this is between her and me" Talon barked back and tried to pull me towards the door.

"I don't think so.." Mathius said coolly. The next minute he was behind me and wrapping his arm around my waist. I turned my head to look at him. He was focused on Talon though so I just closed my eyes and tried to breathe. Here I was caught between two large and very pissed-off shifters. One I knew for a fact was a Basilisk. Suits Talon because he was a snake in every essence of the word. But the other, I didn't know what he was like, I only knew he was a Gryphon. There wasn't much spoken or written about them and that is what scared me to the spot. "Take your hands off her!" Mathius growled this low guttural growl. His eyes swirled in waves of gold and emerald green in his sockets. I could feel the heat of his body against my back getting hotter and hotter as his anger rose. I opened my eyes to see he was watching me out of the corner of his eye. His eyes shifted back to Talon and taunted him as he lowered his head and nuzzled the side of my neck. My breathing picked up the closer his face came to that hollow spot. I inadvertently whimpered this half-moan and moved my head to give him better access. This time it was Talon that growled his displeasure at what he was witnessing before him. And it was all about primal possession. Mathius was challenging his claim to me right here in the middle of the office. Pure Dominance filled the space and it made me dizzy.

"Don't touch my property!" Talon snapped as he clenched his fists so tight they were white. Mathius just laughed "Your property? who says?" he taunted some more and nuzzled his nose into my temple before laying a soft peck in its place. "M-MINE-E!!!" a voice bellowed from behind me. Its resonance shook my very core at hearing it. I wasn't scared of it like the others in the room, I gravitated to it. When I looked up at him something happened to me. My eyes turned an intense shade of lavender and aquamarine mix which made Mathius smile wide. Then he said again in an unhuman-like sinuous whisper "My Mate." I was gasping for air and I felt like I was burning up as Mathius gently turned me in his arms, shrouding me in the mass of his body. "Say it little one. Say My Alpha, Mate." I knew the significance of what he wanted me to say. And I mean he already technically marked me with one of his fangs. It was unintentional but the mark was still there, burning at the pressure of his dominating presence. I reached up and touch my neck where the Band-Aid was. Mathius noticed and reacted to it like he knew where my train of thought was going. "Say it" he whispered gently again but into the hair on the top of my head. His arms wrapped around me more tightly but not so tight that I couldn't breathe. Amber sat flabbergasted. She was going to have some good gossip for her friends tonight. I knew what would happen if I said those two words that he wanted to hear. I also knew that those two words would rid me of Talon for good. But could I actually live up to being the alpha's mate? Would I even be his actual mate or was this just a way for him to assert dominance? So much spun around and my head hurt. I rested my forehead on his chest and gripped the front of his shirt in my fists to steady the current bout of vertigo.
