Chapter 9

"Sunrise! Can we go out now?" Dewpaw had woken her mentor up early, and Sunrise was still sleepy.

"Sure, Dewpaw," She yawned. "Just...give me a second."

Dewpaw was bouncing around excitedly.

"Ok, I'm ready, come on, Dewpaw." Sunrise padded out of camp, and her apprentice stormed after her. It felt weird teaching her apprentice now when it seemed like only yesterday that Tealstripe taught her.

"Here's the RiverClan border. They eat fish and swim a lot." Sunrise explained.

"Really? I thought all cats hated water."

Sunrise shook her head. She went farther by the Thunderpath. "ShadowClan lives over on the other side." She said.

"Cool! And...what was the other one? Wasn't it like BreezeClan or something?"

Sunrise laughed. "No, silly. It's called WindClan. They live on the moor and they eat rabbits."

"Now can we practice battle moves?" Dewpaw asked. Sunrise's apprentice reminded her so much of when she was an apprentice.

I wonder if she'll ever attack a fox.

But she doubted that. "Sure, follow me." Sunrise led Dewpaw to a grassy area. "Practice getting behind me and trying to attack me without me noticing you."

Dewpaw nodded. Quickly, Dewpaw ran behind her mentor and didn't stop running. But, Sunrise had heard her pawsteps from the moment she started running. She jumped out of the way and Dewpaw looked down.

"Don't worry, it's only your first try." Sunrise mewed comfortably. "One thing I recommend is to keep your pawsteps light, so your enemy can't hear you."

"Oh, ok. But, can we take a break?" Dewpaw asked.

"A few minutes, ok?"

Dewpaw ran off to graze in the grass. Sunrise wanted to take a little nap. After a few moments, there was a bundle of fur on Sunrise.

"Haha! I got you!" Dewpaw boasted.

Sunrise laughed. "Yes, you did, and I didn't hear you. The only problem is that your enemy probably won't be sleeping."

Dewpaw nodded. "Now I get the hang of it. Can I try it again?"

Sunrise nodded. "Go right ahead." Dewpaw learned very easily. Sunrise was impressed. By sunfall Dewpaw had learned a lot of battle moves.

"I bet I can beat my brothers!" She said.

"I'm sure you can." Sunrise purred. The two cats walked back to camp, and when they got back, there was something very unpleasant.

"Graystar! Birchfur and Tealstripe are dead!" Graystar immediately came out of her den. "WHAT? THIS CANNOT BE POSSIBLE!" She yelled.

Cloudflight nodded. "There's proof right here!"

Graystar came over and saw the two dead bodies. She sighed.

Then Rowanfeather said something that Sunrise didn't believe a bit. "Moonshadow did it! There's her fur!"

Graystar's pelt bristled. "Silverleaf!" She howled.

The tabby poked her head out of the medicine cat den.

"Check to see if what Rowanfeather said is true."

Silverleaf rushed over and examined Birchfur's body.

"It's true!" She wailed. "Moonshadow killed Birchfur!"

The Clan gasped.

Moonshadow growled.

Graystar did not want to put up with it. "Leave! And don't come back."

"Fine! Exile me for something I didn't do!" Moonshadow growled.

Graystar turned to the crowd of cats. "Sunrise, will you be the new deputy of ThunderClan?"

Sunrise hesitated. She knew what she had to do. She dipped her head. "I'm sorry, Graystar. I will not. Moonshadow is my sister, and she's my best friend. I'm going with her into exile."

Moonshadow had tears in her eyes. "Please Sunrise...don't. I don't deserve a sister like you."

Sunrise brushed her pelt against her sister's. "It's ok. I want to." As the two cats turned to leave the Clan, a voice shouted, "Wait! If my mentor is going into exile, I'm coming too!" Dewpaw rushed to Sunrise.

Squirrelpelt looked hurt, and Cloudflight did too.

"Please Dewpaw you can't!"

Dewpaw nodded. "I'm loyal to my mentor and I always will be."

Squirrelpelt growled. "Then you are no longer my daughter!" She lunged at Dewpaw, and Dewpaw's eyes were filled with fear as her own mother tried to kill her.

Sunrise jumped in. "STOP! I won't let you hurt her." She raked her claws on Squirrelpelt's muzzle, leaving her shocked. "Come on, Dewpaw. We need to get out of this camp."

Sunrise, Moonshadow and Dewpaw padded out. It had only been one day since she started training her apprentice.

And now look what happens. She thought sadly.

"Come on. We need to find shelter. Away from ThunderClan." Moonshadow nodded, and Dewpaw followed.
