The private place to talk was a small hallway off the Ravenclaw tower, with high windows and sunlight streaming through. They were to reconvene there in 30 minutes and arrive there separately. Regulus insisted upon this, that they should not be seen together.
Diana arrived in the hallway first. She considered what she was doing, and she wasn't sure what it was. Why should she trust Regulus, what if this was some horrid plan to humiliate her. Her thoughts spiralled for the next few minutes until she heard.
"Diana."
She turned to face him. In his hands was a large weathered leather bound book. The pages were crinkled and yellowed.
"What is this?" She asked.
He opened it to a page way at the end and handed it to her.
"The Mind Bridge: An Advanced Form of Legilimency," she read aloud, looking up at him quickly she repeated "legilimency? Are you serious?"
He nodded, his expression grave as he said "I've been reading up on it. It's when two wizards link their minds together so that they can communicate. If you hide it well it is nearly undetectable to anyone who may look through your mind. But it is like a doorway, you can only communicate if both parties want to, and you or anyone else can't enter the other person's mind through the bridge."
Diana looked at him shocked. "Is... is this your plan?"
"Yes."
"I... I don't know what to say." She paused, a mind bridge with Regulus Black? For what, what would that even mean or do? "What would happen with it?"
"I could continue to stay with my family, any information I hear about the Dark Lord or his plans I could pass to you through the bridge and you could inform the Ministry or Dumbledore."
Diana had to turn away from him. "How would I explain knowing this? And why can't someone else be your bridge."
"Maybe, if Dumbledore knew our plan then he could just say he had a spy or something, people trust him, and no one would ever guess we were working together. We're not connected, we aren't even supposed to really know each other."
She turned back to face him, "this is insane, Regulus I can't do this. I thought you meant like, stealing someone's robes as a prank or I dunno anything but this. She looked down at the book and shut it, stuffing it back into his arms. "This is advanced magic Regulus, we're just kids, something could go wrong. I'm sorry I want you-know-who to be stopped too but this is too much, I can't, I'm sorry."
Diana turned away to leave but Regulus called after her.
"I'm in that house all the time. I hear what they say, what they plan. You might think he'll be stopped soon but he's powerful and growing more and more. One day you will not have a choice but to be in this war, and believe me Diana Montgomery a war is coming. It will be on your doorstep and you will have no choice but to let it in. Help me make our dent against him."
Diana turned on her heels to him, "Regulus Black, find someone else to fight with your silly mind games. I can't!"
"Aren't Gryffindors supposed to be brave?"
"Yes, and I am brave enough to say no. We aren't powerful wizards, we are kids. Someone will find out, someone bad, and we will both be dead. I want him gone too and I will do my part when the time comes, but that time is not now."
"How can I change your mind?"
"I don't think you can." With that, she left the corridor and Regulus Black struck holding a book too big and too dangerous.
