Should she have agreed to Regulus' plan? Maybe he wasn't crazy. Diana wanted You-know-who gone but she was just a teenager, she wasn't special, what good would she be at stopping the Dark Lord. Maybe what was best was to keep her head down and let the Ministry and wizards like Dumbledore deal with Voldemort.
It was almost lunch so Diana headed towards the Great Hall. Hoping to spot a friend for lunch, but there were hardly any Gryffindors in sight, a few first years and that was about it. How odd, she thought to herself. She could always count on James or Saoirse being the first ones there for lunch. She wasn't particularly hungry so she headed up to the common room to see if anyone wanted to have lunch together.
When she entered the common room Diana knew something was wrong. It was packed and filled with hushed tones and aggressive whispers, she even heard a few people crying. Everyone turned when she entered the common room with hope in their eyes but when they realized it was Diana they just turned back to their small groups speaking low.
Diana quickly found Saoirse, Margeret, and Ginerva huddled in a corner.
"What happened, what is going on?" Diana asked quickly.
Margeret jumped to her feet gave her a big hug, "thank goodness you are alright, we were worried he'd got you too."
"What are you talking about?"
"It's the most awful thing, Mulciber attacked Mary!" Margeret said, tears in her eyes.
Diana gasped and fell into the armchair at her feet, "is she alright?"
Saoirse said swiftly, "we think so, she's alive-"
"Barely," Margeret interjected.
"How did it happen?" Diana asked fervently.
The three girls looked between themselves silently asking which one had to deliver the horrid news.
It was Saoirse who spoke first, "we're aren't entirely sure. She was with Sirius in the corridor outside of charms and Sirius said that Mulciber and Avery came up to them and Mulciber pushed Sirius, talking about how he was a blood traitor and all this awful stuff. Then Sirius pushed him back, y'know Sirius he doesn't take shit from anyone. Anyways it came to wands and they were duelling and Mary was yelling for them to stop. And," Saorise took a deep breath before she continued. "He, he said that Sirius shouldn't need a mudblood bitch defending him and that the Dark Lord wants all mudbloods dead so this is for him. Then he cast this spell, that none of us even know but it looked like Mary had been slashed with a sword all over her. She... she was bleeding so much and that's when McGonagall found them because someone told her Mulciber and Sirius were fighting. Mulciber ran but some teachers found him, he'll probably be expelled. Mary's in the hospital wing with Lily, Sirius and Marlene. Madame Pomfrey is taking care of her."
Diana sat there stricken. Mulciber tried to kill Mary for the Dark Lord. Her throat felt like it was closing up, Regulus was right, the war had come to her doorstep.
"How do they not know what spell it was?" Diana finally asked.
Margeret shook her head, "I have no idea, I've never heard of it. Sirius said it was like, Sibdimsepress, I don't know."
Ginerva looked quiet as she said "Sectumsempra, that's what Sirius said Mulciber cast. Only no one has ever heard of it. And I don't want to point fingers but people will come to the obvious." She paused. "You know that kid Severus Snape in 6th year?"
Margeret, Diana, and Saoirse nodded.
She continued, "Duncan said he's really creepy always coming up with spells and curses. That he came up with this curse that Duncan couldn't find in any book that just shrivelled up this plant, completely killed it. Now it's just a plant but still edging on dark magic. Snape is like best buds with Mulciber, I wouldn't be surprised if it was one of his."
"That's a pretty big accusation," Margeret said.
"But it makes sense," said Saorise, "the guy's a creep and maybe he didn't mean for it to be used but someone came up with it, it's new. Maybe it was him."
Diana couldn't take it any longer, standing up quickly she said, "I need some air."
Saorise stood with her, "I'll come too."
"Thank you but I need some time alone." As she got up to leave Ginerva blocked her path.
"What is this?" Diana said.
"We were talking," said Saoirse, gesturing to the other girls. "Now none of us are fancy purebloods and Ginerva and I are probably counted as blood traitors but we're less likely to be attacked than you, since you're a muggleborn. We want to make a buddy system, not just for you, for everyone, we'll propose it to the whole school. Mulciber has to be the tip of the iceberg and we can't have another attack like on Mary. It is lucky Sirius was with her and someone came to help but if that had been in a lonely hallway far away, she may have died. We don't want that to happen to you." She reached out her hand and wrapped it around Diana's, "we're worried and we hope you are too."
Diana felt touched by her friend's love. They would go out of their way to make sure she was safe. She nodded, "ok, thank you."
They all sat back down on the couch in silence, thinking about poor Mary. Diana decided right then and there, after Mulciber's attack on Mary in the name of you-know-who, she would do whatever it took to stop him and his followers. Even if she was just a teenager. If Mulciber could be so evil as just a student she could be equally good and brave.
