Chapter 18: Drifting
——————————

Unknown Point of View:

The silence is loud. Even my footsteps refused to make a sound. I stopped trying to reach out to someone hours ago. No one was answering. I was alone here.

I feel like I'm going crazy. There is nothing here. No pictures, no people, no sounds, nothing. Nothing but my own thoughts to keep me entertained. Who even am I? Where did I come from? How did I get here? Where even is here? This is terrifying.

I am floating in nothingness. In darkness. The further I walk, the darker it seems to get. Like the light is draining out of a lightless place. Finally surrendering, I take a seat and stare into the sea of darkness.

As I hear the sound of wind fly by me, my thoughts cease. In a space full of stagnant silence, the sound of wind was surprising. There was still nothing here, so where was it coming from?

I heard it again accompanied by the sound of leaves rustling. Whipping my head around in circles, I tried to find the source of the noise. But as always, there was nothing. I faintly heard the clacking of sharp claws against the ground.

Something is hunting me.

I slowly stood up, still unable to see anything. The sound felt like it was coming from everywhere and nowhere at all. The hairs all over my body stood up as I felt heavy breathing on the back of my neck.

I whipped my body around to come face to face with nothing. Whatever it is, it's taunting me. It wants me scared and, unfortunately, it's working. I can feel my heart race. I contemplate running or staying still, my mind never coming to a decision before I am thrown to the side by a force I couldn't see. I fell to the ground with a harsh thud. I heard more clacking as if there were more than one of these invisible beings. I took off running.

I didn't know which direction I was running in but I didn't care. My only thought was to get as far away as possible from whatever was chasing after me. Anxiety and fear take over my body and I feel a crack in my arm.

I am terrified as my bones start breaking and shifting without warning. I fall to the ground when my ankle snaps and extends. I let out a scream but the sound is stolen from my mouth. The atmosphere becomes deafeningly silent once again as my bones break and rearrange. My mouth opens wide as my spine snaps and I feel the pain shoot through my entire body. A piercing scream echoes from me. The clicking has disappeared only to be replaced with the sound of my body shifting. I lay there for what seems like hours in agonizing pain before I am able to open my eyes and stand.

My eyes widen and then my brows furrow when I realize I am standing, but not on two legs as usual. Instead I have four. I can see shiny grey fur with specs of silver, purple, and other colors. My mind swirls with questions. Am I some type of monster? Where do I come from? How is this possible? I wrack my brain for answers but come up blank.

I take a step with one huge, furry paw. My muscles are sore and I can feel my bones and joints aching with each movement. I ignore it and take yet another step and my hind legs follow. One step turns into another and soon I am jogging. I come to a stop when my breaths come out in pants. This was too fucking fun.

I was too busy checking out what my body could do that I missed when the sound of clicking started to again. I froze when I heard a low growl was that seemed to echo inside my head. Like so many times before, I looked up and looked around me but again, I saw nothing. My panic began to rise again. I could feel this presence circling around me and the longer I stood there, the more beings that surrounded me. I heard a rush right before I felt sharp claws slice through my side. I tried to scream but it came out more as a squeal.

The injury burned hot like fire but there was no blood. I had no time to be amazed at that fact before I felt myself being pulled backwards. I looked behind me to see a long furry tail pulled to tight that instead of a slight bend, it was completely straight. I let out more screams that turned to squeals and whimpers as they left my mouth reminding me more of a dog than a human. The entity dropped my tail and then I was being swiped at again. Cut after cut was being left on my body before I heard a deep growl that caused it to stop.

Loud whimpers left my mouth as I tried to curl into a ball and mitigate the pain. Instinctively, I reached out with my tongue and started licking my wounds. I heard footsteps that sounded more like thunder approaching me and I stood up weakly to back away. I hadn't even raised my back paw off the ground when a booming growl echoed around me. The being revealed itself to me. The first thing I have seen since I opened my eyes in this place. It towered above me and was twice my width. This monster had well defined muscles throughout its body. It looked strong and scary. Like it could cut me in half with one swipe. I wanted nothing more than to run away but my body stood frozen in fear. It seemed to be shaped the same as I. A large dog or wolf thing. Its fur was completely black like the space around us but its eyes...its eyes were pure white.

My breathing had picked up and I was completely panicking now. My vision blurred but still I remained standing, looking into its eyes. Every breath felt like knives digging deeper into my skin. It was enough to make me pass out but the look in this being's eyes held me captive. It circled around me predatorily, as if it was sizing me up. I tried to cower and prove to it that I was no threat. I didn't know where I was or if I was even alive but if I was, I wanted to keep my life. It stopped when it stood back in front of me again. It sat down on its hind legs and stared at me.

"Do you know what you are?" It spoke to me. I could not find it within myself to speak so I shook my head slowly.

"Do you know where you are?" Again I shook my head.

"Do you know who you are?" Another head shake. The being tilted its own head and if I wasn't so terrified, I probably would have found it adorable. It looked as though it was contemplating something. It straightened its head when it had finally decided.

"Kill her."

My eyes widened and I heard thousands of growls. I took off running away from all the growls. My mind only concerned with outrunning these beings and finding safety. The sound of footsteps seemed to get closer and closer. I prayed to God that I could get away. In the distance, I saw a bright light. I didn't know if it would bring me to safety but I ran towards it with everything in me. My legs burned in this new form but I couldn't give up. Not when it meant dying. I pushed even harder and saw the light come closer and closer to me. I felt the monsters snipping at the backs of my feet and I let out a loud cry. I didn't want to die. I wanted to live. I wanted to get as far away as possible from whatever the fuck was following me. The light that I saw was only a few feet in front of me now. I could see most of the light being blocked by a door but slowing down to open it would mean death. I used the last of my energy to burst through the door and land on the other side into the light. I watched as the being and its goons stopped at the entrance. None of them daring to step a foot on the other side. Relief spread over me. I looked back into the eyes of the dark being and felt a strike of panic when I saw an eerie grin looking back at me. I shook my head and started walking away. Looking back periodically to see that same eerie grin until it had disappeared from my view.
