Chapter 16: A Tale of Woes

The Day After The FightMatthew's Point of View
Her skin looks so pale, not the beautiful tan color it once had but a sickening grey color that made me want to puke. It's been hours since the fight ended, since I had carried her body into the hospital. She was lying there, bleeding out, no heart beat. I wish I could say I felt something but I didn't. I was numb, empty.
I stared at the Mark on her shoulder. It was fading now. Now that the mix of her blood and my venom wasn't running through her veins, there was nothing to keep it alive and vibrant. I placed a hand on her head caressing it gently.
"Kayla I'm so sorry." I couldn't bare to bring my voice above a whisper.
"I'm sorry that I failed you. That I let you down. I'm sorry I didn't protect you enough. I'm sorry I never thought about you or cared for you the way you needed me to. You deserved better than me. You deserved someone who could love you unconditionally. I'm sorry I wasn't better to you." I placed my head on hers and wished that I could feel heat radiating from it but instead I just felt cold.
"I'm gonna make this right. I'm going to find your sister and I'm going to bring her back, back to you and back to her Mate." I closed my eyes to try to keep the tears back. I didn't have the right to cry over her, Mate or not. I had never treated her like my Mate.
"Matthew." I didn't move from my spot. I couldn't. Even though she was gone, I still hoped she'd wake up and hit me, tell me to leave her alone and stop touching her. I hoped that she'd get up off this table and walk out of here with her head held high and her resolve to not love me just as strong as ever. Having her alive and hating me was better than this. I'd rather hear her chastise and sneer at me if it meant I could hear her voice.
"Matt."
"What do you want?"
"You need to let her go."
"Easy for you to say. You didn't reject your Mate and she sure as hell didn't die." There was silence as the Alpha just stared at me.
"Why didn't you tell me she was sick, hm? I'm her Mate for fuck's sake."
"She gave me strict orders not to."
"She gave you orders?" I scoffed.
"Well she was part of a Royal Family. What else was I supposed to do?" That word crippled me. Was. As in no longer.
"But I am her Mate. If I had known I could've protected her better. I could've watched out for her. I could've done something. Something other than watch as the enemy drove a knife through her." The scene replays in my mind, the sickening crack, her falling into the arms of the enemy only for them to shove a knife in her stomach. I felt sick.
"What could you have done? You couldn't even feel your wolf anymore." It was true. After I had kissed her and she ran from me I couldn't get in contact with my wolf. He was there but I couldn't talk to him. Then as the days passed I could feel him less and less. The day of the fight it was a struggle just to shift.
"You know he warned me."
"What?"
"He warned me that something would happen."
"Who warned you?"
"My wolf. He told me something would happen if I didn't learn to truly love her. Now look where we are. Marlas is gone and Kayla-" I stopped. I started getting choked up on my words. I felt Remi's hand rub my back and I shoved it off.
"I'm fine. I'm fine." I got up abruptly, "Come on, we need to find Eliza. Is her Mate still here?"
"Locked up in his room as far as I can tell." I turned back to Kayla and placed a kiss on her forehead.
"I will avenge you, my love." I whispered and turned back to Rémi, "Don't bury her until her sister is found."
"Matthew I know you're grieving but one: you don't give me orders and two: having her body here for so long isn't healthy."
"This isn't for me. I never treated her like a Mate, I don't get to start now. This is for Eliza, unless you want to be the one to tell her that she missed her sister's funeral." He didn't say anything and I took that as my cue to leave.
I walked to the house that Kayla and Eliza had bought when this whole war business had started. The house was eerily quiet, that was until I heard the harsh sobs coming from inside it. I stepped over the door that had been busted open and walked towards the room where I heard the screams. I softly knocked on the door, giving him the chance to sober up if he needed to, before I walked in.
He just looked at me, eyes swollen and nose red, chest heaving greatly.
"What are you doing here?" His voice was rough and raspy.
"We need your help to find Eliza." He scoffed and rolled his eyes.
"My Flame will come home when she's ready."
"If you truly believe that then why are you so upset?"
He's silent and I knew I'd caught him.
"Look, I know you don't like me. I know you'd rather kill me than help me. But I'm really just trying to do what's right. I'm too late to help Kayla but I can at least honor her name by bringing her sister home so she can mourn and say goodbye." He stared at me for a long time before he sighed and nodded his head.
"After the battle, I saw her heading west."
"Alright then that's where we'll start. How does your Mate Bond work? Can you track her?"
"If I had Charred her, I would be able to see exactly where she is but we were taking our time so I haven't done that yet."
"Okay so what can you do?"
"I can feel her when she's feeling intense emotions. The closer I am to her, the more powerful the feeling gets."
"That's good. I can track her scent as long as she doesn't go past water but considering there's about 3 rivers west of here, I highly doubt that it'll be as useful. Come on, we need to try to catch her before she gets herself killed." He nodded and sprung to his feet. His eyes were sad but there was a spark of determination in them. He was ready to get his Mate back.
"And uh, thank you for taking care of my Mate and ex-girlfriend like I should've been."
"Just don't fuck up the next time you get someone to love you." And with that we both set off to find Eliza. I quickly mind-linked Rémi telling him our plan and where he could find us.
Dear Gods, I hope we find Eliza.
Unknown Point of View
"He-o?" My voice keeps cutting out.
"Is an-on- -ere?" I grunt in frustration and sit on what I hope to be the floor. I can't tell with everything being dark like it is.
"H-ll-? It- free-in-." I figure it's better if I stop talking if nothing is going to come out properly. I wait patiently for someone or something to respond but nothing happens and I'm left breathing out clouds of smoke from the cold air around me.
