Chapter 15: It Starts
————————————-
The Next Month, December 15thTwo months left
I woke up to the sound of my heart beating audibly. I groggily watch up and placed a hand over my heart.
"Why are you beating so fast?" I whispered. It was only then that I noticed how eerily quiet it had become. There was no sound throughout my house, no sound coming from the surrounding neighborhood. The animals that were usually active at night seemed to have disappeared. I slowly stood up, wincing at the pain that erupted through my body, and walked to the window. As I watched, everything seemed still. There was no wind in the trees or animals bouncing about. I knew something was wrong. I turned around and walked through my home quietly and carefully. Masking my presence, I made my way to Liza's room where I woke her up quietly. As she was about to speak, I placed my hand over her mouth and put a finger up to mine. When she nodded, I took my hand off her mouth and pointed to my ears telling her to listen. I knew she understood when her face changed from confused to guarded. She had noticed too.
"Liza, mind-link the Alpha. Let him know."
"Okay. What are you going to do? Where are you going?"
"I'm going to check the rest of the house. Stay here and don't turn on any lights. Tell the Alpha as well. Tell him to alert everyone but make sure they don't make any noticeable signs of consciousness."
"Okay. Be safe. I love you."
"I love you too little sis." After cutting off the mind-link, I exited her room and did something I thought I would never do; I mind-linked Matthew.
"Matt?" I got no reply.
"Gods, does this thing even work with you Matthew?"
"Who the fuck is this and what do you want?"
"Jeez, you're grumpy when you wake up."
"Well when you mind-link me at 3:50 am."
"Whatever, we don't have time for this. This is Kayla, you need to quietly get ready to fight. Don't turn on any lights and don't make any noise."
"What the hell are you talking about Kayla?" I looked out the kitchen window and saw a flash of silver. Before I knew it, a bullet came flying through the window and grazed my cheek. I winced, making sure not to groan too loudly even though they already knew we were awake and ready to fight.
"They're here." I shut off the mind-link before running up the stairs as quickly as I could to find my weapons and battle clothes. I took the rest of the pills my mother's doctors gave me, hoping I could regain some strength. I was in no position to fight but they were here and I couldn't hide anymore. My sister came running into my room right before we heard a boom and the house shook.
"KAYLA!" She fell down. I tan towards her and helped her up.
"Kayla, the house is surrounded!"
"It's okay. Relax, we've been training for this. Remember the plan." We needed to lure them away from the neighborhood into the woods. We'd anticipated they'd catch on. While we had hoped that we'd be able to catch them off guard, we knew there was a possibility that they'd get to us before we got to them. I peeked out the window to see at least 20 soldiers on this side of the house. I heard banging on the front door and decided I had two options. I could either stay and wait for them to come in and fight them off or I could jump out my window and lure them away. Figuring that there were at least as many soldiers on every side of the house, I though outrunning them would give both me and Liza a better chance. The pills I took were slowly giving me strength and it was times like this that I thanked myself for moving into a house closer to the forest and the pack.
"On 3, we're going to jump out the window and just bolt towards the woods. Got it?"
"Are you sure you're strong enough for that?"
"Whether I'm strong enough or not, you need to keep moving. Don't stop, don't look back."
"Kayla, I-"
"Promise me. You better not stop fighting until the enemy is dead or they wave a white flag, regardless of what happens to me. This pack is your family too, remember that."
"Why are you talking like you're dying?" I couldn't tell her the truth. I couldn't tell her that I knew I wasn't going to make it. The wound the bullet made was now throbbing and it was giving me a headache that was almost crippling. My insides felt like slush and I wouldn't be surprised if they were actual soup by now. My limbs were reminiscent of skeleton and the only thing keeping me going by now was the adrenaline. You could tell by one look at me that I wasn't going to make it. I knew it, she knew it but she was holding on to that childlike innocence and who am I to shatter that.
"Just promise me."
"I promise." She said quietly, tears already shining in her eyes as she faced the inevitable truth. She was going to lose me.
"One. Two. Three." I held her hand as we both ran towards the window just as the soldiers had burst into the room. We shifted midair and ran as fast as we could towards the clearing in the forest that had been set up just for this occasion. My wolf ran with a slight limp as I tried to hide the pain of the fracture to my shoulder. Eliza was ahead of me by miles but I couldn't bring myself to run faster. I was already panting and we hadn't even gotten that far. The burning in my lungs was begging me to stop but the Royal soldiers at my heels were telling me to keep running. I pushed forward, watching for Eliza. She stayed true to her word, she didn't look back, not even for a second. I saw the clearing up ahead, saw the people I had trained fighting against enemies who were far greater than them and winning. When I reached the clearing, I turned suddenly and bit the limbs of the soldiers who had been chasing after me. I tried to stop as many as I could from advancing further into the battle. At some point I'd realized that Matthew, Eliza, and Dani had come to fight by my side.
We were so close to winning. Tens of thousands of Succubi and Incubi lay dead on the clearing floor. I charged for one of the few soldiers left when I felt a sharp pain in my heart followed by the feeling of someone thrusting their hand in my chest and squeezing. Then everything went black.
Eliza's POV
I heard a shatter and I turned just in time to see Kayla drop to the floor and a Succubus drive their hand through her chest.
"No!" I ran to her only to be tackled to the floor by another soldier. I quickly shifted and bit their head off before running over to my sister. I whined loudly, pushing my about into her face. Another soldier jumped on top of me. I growled viciously before running head on into a tree then turning to smack them against it. When I felt their hand slip from my fur, I turned to see it was the same one who had killed Kayla. I snarled darkly before shifting back and shoving my hand through her chest and squeezing her heart until it popped. I took my hand out and licked the blood off. But I still wasn't satisfied.
These were the beings that took her life.
Before I knew it, I was seeing red. Every Succubus and Incubus that was on the field was fed their own heart. I jumped from enemy to enemy until there were none left. The battle was over. Every werewolf left standing searched for their Mates, finding them either dead or injured. But I couldn't stop. I ran past them all. There was only one goal in mind. Lucian.
I am going to make sure he never breathes again.
