SALEM DEMARCO COULD be described as many things. if you were to ask iris, she would say that she's the sweetest girl she's ever met. breathtakingly pretty, smart, quiet. salem wouldn't believe that, though.

possibly it sprouted from her overarching need to be perfect. everything she did, she had to be the best at. although her parents were kind, they always made her feel diminutive.

they were everything she wanted to be, successful, smart, and most of all, in love.

salem wanted to be in love. quite honestly, she craved it. ever since she was young, she would lay awake at night, staring at the ceiling of her room and praying that she would wake up in love.

in love and loved in return, that is.

her scattered boyfriends and girlfriends through her high school years proved insufferable, always ending with salem in tears and mumbled apologies, awkward looks in the hallways, and feeling like a complete and utter loser.

the dozens of failed relationships chipped down at salems self esteem, making her feel unloveable.

it was pitiful, and the feeling swam in her stomach and made her feel woozy, wanting to just lay down and never get up again.

that was until she met iris. it was the first time she had platonically been in love, and it made her feel like she was floating.

her laugh was caramel, sickly sweet and smooth. her voice was soft, and just the sight of her made salem smile.

her hugs were warm, and her personality matched like a puzzle piece with salem, completing a part of her she felt was always missing.
