I brought us up to the next level of the building, my knees went limp and I started to collapse. Fear showed in the blue eyes next to me and I held my ground."Come on, we need to get to the roof," I grabbed her wrist and started running.
"You're super," The girl stated. "There's no time," I replied. My breathing was coming out in ragged breaths and I looked for an exit. Blast, why did I go back for this girl? I wondered. She let out a whimper and I kept running.Footsteps were everywhere and I knew we were going to get caught if I didn't do anything. I kicked down one of the doors and a window was at the far end of the room. I rushed over and opened it.
"Are you crazy?" The girl hissed. "Look, there will be guards here any second we do not have time for this," I snapped. The girl's shoulders shrunk back. "Listen, I have done this a dozen times. Nothing will happen to you. Okay?"
The girl's head still hung but she nodded. "Hold on tight," I bent a bit and she wrapped her arms around my neck and buried her head in the crook of my neck. Please work, please work. The girls' breathing hitched as I jumped.
My senses cleared as we fell. Seventy feet, fifty. I knew I had to do this quickly. I wrapped my arms around the shoulders of the girl and cradled her. Thirty feet. I gathered all my strength and right as I hit the ground I disappeared and reappeared in the alley across the street.
Alarms were still coming from the building and I caught a glimpse of the telepath standing at the entrance of the building. "Find them!" A voice quipped. More footsteps filled the silence and I crouched.
"I can take you somewhere safe. But once you know where it is you're in. No turning back," I explained. "Or, you can just run here and risk getting caught,"
The girl's mouth opened but she hesitated. "I'll come with you," I nodded.
I put my hand on her shoulder and we disappeared into the rooftops. "We're going to jump across," She was surprisingly calm with this announcement. I backed up a few feet and she followed. When we made the jump I wasn't expecting her to make the jump completely and roll onto the next building.
We ran at full speed jumping and rolling for ten minutes before I motioned for us to stop.
"Are you alright?" The girl asked. "I'm fine," I quipped back, leaning against a rail. I looked back and saw her flinch. Again I sighed. "I just need a minute."
The light in the sky had turned orange, highlighting the glass buildings in the center of the city and casting a soft glow over the rest of the smaller ones on the outskirts near the waterfront.
"What's your name? And how old are you?"I asked. "Elizabeth. But my friends call me Lizzy. I'm eleven." I nodded. "Alright Elizabeth, we're close. This is your last chance to leave,"
Elizabeth looked around and answered, "I still want to come with you," I stood straight and a wave of dizziness washed over me. Blast, why does this keep happening? I wondered pressing my eyes shut waiting for the dizzy spell to pass.
When I opened my eyes Elizabeth was looking at me with a concerned look spread across her face. I turned and jumped across again. I heard Elizabeth land next to me and I walked over to the fire escape and hopped down causing the metal to bend.
We crept through the alley and the asylum came into view. I pushed open the doors and noticed the small girl standing close to me and cowering. Heads turned and I could feel the judgemental looks and I didn't care.
I turned around and knelt. "Hey, no one is going to hurt you here." Her head lifted. "Because if they do," I paused, making sure everyone could hear me. "They will have to deal with me."
