My feet drummed rhythmically on the concrete as I ran through the beating rain threatening to slow me down. My clothes and hair were soaked, and the chilling wind in the air was making my teeth chatter. But what bothered me most was the tears trying to escape my eyes and blur my vision.

I wiped them away but didn't stop running.

Idiot! Don't cry! You have no reason to. Kyoko must feel one hundred times worse than you, and she always manages to keep her cool.

Just imagine what she's thinking...

I remembered her voice on the phone, all choked up and frantic. Nothing like how she usually sounded. She didn't tell me much, just to meet her at the hospital.

Kyoko was always very helpful to me. And as she did with me, I helped her in more ways than one, like in school when she forgot to study for a test, or when things got rough at home, and she needed to vent to me. And I was always able to help. But this time, I was afraid of the fact that there was nothing I could do to help her out of this.

Finally getting to the hospital, I raced up the stairs, ignored it when the lady at the front desk yelled at me to wipe my shoes on the rug.

I almost ran into a few people as I raced down the hallways, keeping track of the room numbers to find room 304. The room Kyoko's mom was in.

304, 304, 304-

I turned a corner to find a purple haired girl standing stiffly next to the door of room 304 with her head down.

"Kyoko!" I had yelled in the high-pitched voice of a kid and ran over to her. I saw her whip around to face me and noticed her tear-streaked face. I enveloped her in a hug.

It's okay, Kyoko. I'm here, I thought to myself.

Her arms stayed suspended in the air for a minute in surprise. I kept my head stuffed into her neck as she relaxed a bit and hugged me back. And even after, I could hear her silently crying.

Kyoko's mom had been sick for a while now. It started with just a little cough, but everyone quickly realized that it was something more serious than that. After a week of not being able to get up, she was diagnosed with a type of sickness that doctors weren't exactly sure how to cure.

After Mrs. Kirigiri was hospitalized, Kyoko and I went to visit her every day after school. Considering that Mrs. Kirigiri was my Jiu-jitsu teacher, and that I was friends with her daughter, I knew the woman well. Infact, I was so close to her that some days she felt more like a parent than my own parents were. It wasn't that my parents were bad. It's just that they were in debt and had to work a lot, so they didn't have much time for my brothers and I.

I forced out a laugh remembering this, and before I knew it, I began crying with Kyoko. We stayed in our embrace for a long time, as if we would both shatter apart if we separated. And honestly, we might have.

Eventually I forced myself to ask, "is she..."

"She's already dead." Kyoko said. I clenched my fists, despite how much I was preparing myself for those words, they still hit like a truck.

"I'm sorry," I whispered and hugged my friend tighter.

Just then, the door to room 304 creaked open and out stepped Mr. Kirigiri. He didn't look as devastated as we did-adults were good at hiding their emotions. But I could tell he was distressed from the look in his eyes and his shaking breath.

Kyoko quickly got off of me and looked at her father. "Dad-" she started cautiously, but never got the chance to say more.

Mr. Kirigiri, his face stone hard, grabbed Kyoko's wrist and pulled her down the hallway.

"Dad, where are we going?" the lavender eyed girl asked.

"We're leaving." Mr. Kirigiri said, not looking back at his daughter.

But Kyoko looked back to look at me, and I saw a confused and vulnerable look in her eyes. I stood there, not sure what to do. Kyoko continued looking me in the eye until her father dragged her around a corner. And then, in the blink of an eye, she was gone.
