Along with MMA tournaments, I also entered lots of performances and talent shows. Pretty much just held by rich people who wanted to be entertained at parties. Sometimes I would spar with someone else, break boards, perform certain in-sequence forms with others or by myself. But the important part was that, while not paying well normally, I often received extra money from wealthier people, which made the pay a lot better. This along with the fact I got so much experience from these performances made it worth it.

That was one of the things that came with being poor and having a dream, I couldn't just compete regularly, I had to perform as well, which was slightly different, and usually manifested itself in the form of showing off for rich people with nothing else to entertain them, often alongside people who had talents that had nothing to do with martial arts.

Not that I was complaining, or thought those people were below me or anything. I knew most of them were as or more talented than me. And I met a lot of people this way, as well. People from all different backgrounds and races and religions... people with all sorts of things to offer.

For example, I met this one girl who claimed she could speak with the dead through music. She would ask you for the name of a deceased person you had known personally when they were still alive, and for a song that the person liked, or you felt described them. Then she would do this weird out of sync dance that felt really awkward to watch, in my opinion, but audiences seemed to like it.

There was also this guy who told jokes while riding a unicycle. He was actually really funny, though I was too awkward to talk to him too much, so I never knew him too well.

Even though none of us were particularly big-time entertainers, I didn't personally know any of the people who I performed with or competed against. Except one.

I waited in the bus, tapping my foot out of nervousness. It was five minutes until we left for Tokyo and Shi-Shu still wasn't here. They had always been the forgetful and clumsy type, so maybe they slept in again. Or maybe one of their pets got loose and they were chasing it around. Whatever it was, they had to find a way to get here. Fast. Otherwise, I didn't know what I'd do.

I'm gonna kick their ass for making me worry, I thought in annoyance.

A high-pitched voice calling my name snapped me out of my thoughts. From the window's view, I saw a short kid with wild hair waving a gloved hand at me. In their other hand was a small cage that they were trying to keep from bouncing around too much.

Shi-Shu ran into the bus, gave the driver a quick apology, and looked around frantically until they saw me. They waved, and about half of the people in the bus looked at me. I gave them an awkward smile.

But looking back at the younger entertainer, I smiled in amusement. This was them, alright. My best friend since my first official performance two years ago, Shion Shubaru. [Aka Shi-Shu.] Clumsy, happy-go-lucky, and usually late to important events.

Don't get me wrong, it's not that I thought they were irresponsible or anything. And I know they didn't usually have a problem with time management. It's just...

Shi-Shu walked over to me and sat down, placing the cage in-between us. "Sorry! Daisy got out again."

"Daisy? Why did you bring Daisy with you?" I asked. "It's not like you'll be performing."

My eyes rested on the cage that sat in-between us. Something inside it began to rattle.

"Daisy's been acting up," Shi-Shu explained. "I've been keeping her in her cage since our last performance, since she's been crankier than usual. I thought that being in a new environment for a bit would be good for her."

I sighed. Daisy. Shi-Shu's pet ferret. Out of all the animals Shi-Shu owned, she was by far my least favorite. Whenever I came over, she would hiss at me [Well, kind of a hiss. It was the closest noise to a hiss a ferret could make] and arch her back like a cat. Even though I have done literally nothing to her.

Shi-Shu was an animal tamer, training animals to do certain tricks and then wowing audiences with them. Daisy was his main attraction, even though she hated pretty much everyone besides her owner.

I leaned forward to look inside of the cage. In it, a white ferret with brown spots and shiny red eyes stared back at me. She seemed to tense up when she saw me and huddled into the back her cage. I stuck my tounge out at her.

"Now, I barely got any sleep last night because of this little rascal. So if you don't..." Shi-Shu let out a huge yawn... "Mind..." and collapse with their head resting on the cage just minutes later.

Luckily, I came prepared. I reached into my bag and pulled out a Harry Potter pillow, that I tucked under Shi-Shu's head.

Looking out the window, I was a bit surprised to not see any houses, but instead long grass and pastures. I had been so distracted by Daisy and Shi-Shu that I hadn't realized that we were out of town already.

After being bored for a few seconds, I pulled out my phone to play Subway Surfer to pass the time.

But... I paused as I was met with my phone wallpaper.

In the picture, two girls were holding ice cream cones and smiling at the camera. One had orange hair and freckles, like me. But she didn't feel like me. She felt like merely a distant memory.

The other girl had white hair that faded purple at the tips, and eyes that shined with a darker, richer purple that looked familiar.

Kyoko.

"Who's that?" A tired Shi-Shu asked me. I jumped, not realizing they were awake and looking at my phone.

"No one," I replied, shutting off my phone and putting it back in my pocket. I rested my elbow on the windowsill and supported my head with my arm.

I need to replace that wallpaper...
