Carina's POV
We went to the great hall and I decided to sit at my house table for lunch. I sit with Luna. "How's your first day been so far?" I ask her curious.
"It's been good, yours?" she asks in her dreamy voice.
"Busy, I have Care of Magical Creatures after lunch" I tell her.
"Oh how wonderful, will you tell me about it later?" she asks me.
"Of course, I know you love magical creatures" I state. I feel something jump onto the bench beside me. I look down to see Honoria and I shake my head with a small smile. I grab a piece of my chicken and give it to her. She purrs happily and eats it.
I finish my lunch and join the trio as they headed for Care of Magical creatures. Yesterday's rain had cleared; the sky was a clear, pale gray. The grass was springy and damp underfoot as we set off for our first ever Care of Magical Creatures class.
Ron and Hermione weren't speaking to each other. "What happened?" I ask Harry quietly.
"Ron thinks the grim is real and Hermione thinks it's not. So now they are fighting" he states. "Not the whole version, but I'm sure Hermione will fill you in later" he adds. I nod my head.
Hagrid was waiting for his class at the door of his hut. He stood in his moleskin overcoat, with Fang the boar hound at his heels, looking impatient to start. I look around and frown in confusion. Why are there slytherins here and not ravenclaws? Am I in the right class? I grab my schedule and see I am. But that only confuses me more, as I know at least two other ravenclaws in my year also picked this subject.
"Got a real treat for yeh today! Great lesson comin' up! Everyone here? Right, follow me!" Hagrid tells us. We follow him to a paddock at the edge of the forbidden forest. He tells us how to open our books and went to get the magical creatures. Which turned out to be a dozen hippogriffs.
They had the bodies, hind legs, and tails of horses, but the front legs, wings, and heads of what seemed to be giant eagles, with cruel, steel-colored beaks and large, brilliantly, orange eyes. The talons on their front legs were half a foot long and deadly looking. The Hippogriffs' gleaming coats, changing smoothly from feather to hair, each of them a different color: stormy gray, bronze, pinkish roan, gleaming chestnut, and inky black. Each of the beasts had a thick leather collar around its neck, which was attached to a long chain.
"Now, firs' thing yeh gotta know abou' Hippogriffs is, they're proud. Easily offended, Hippogriffs are. Don't never insult one, 'cause it might be the last thing yeh do" Hagrid tells us. After tying the hippogriffs to the fence and having us all come closer. I notice Malfoy and his goons not even listening. "Yeh always wait fer the Hippogriff ter make the firs' move. It's polite, see? Yeh walk toward him, and yeh bow, an' yeh wait. If he bows back, yeh're allowed ter touch him. If he doesn' bow, then get away from him sharpish, 'cause those talons hurt" he explains. "Now who wants to go first?" he asks us. No one moves.
"Honestly" I mutter and step forward. "I will Hagrid" I tell him.
"Excellent" he says as I climb the fence into the paddock. "Right then -- let's see how yeh get on with Buckbeak" he states. He untied one of the chains, pulled the gray Hippogriff away from its fellows, and slipped off its leather collar. The class on the other side of the paddock seemed to be holding its breath. As Buckbeak and I lock eyes. "Easy now Cairna, yeh've got eye contact, now try not ter blink. Hippogriffs don' trust yeh if yeh blink too much" Hagrid tells me.
"That's it Carina, now bow" he tells me. I bow lowly not fearing anything. Keeping my eyes on Buckbeak not blinking. He suddenly bent its scaly front knees and sank into what was an unmistakable bow. "Well done, Carina" Hagrid praises me. "Right -- yeh can touch him! Pat his beak, go on" he encourages me.
I step forward arm out slowly. I step just shy of Buckbeak so that he could decide whether or not I pat him. He steps forward resting his beak on my hand. I give him a pat. He closed its eyes lazily, as though enjoying it. Making me smile. "You are very handsome Buckbeak" I tell him and he coos happily at the praise.
"I reckon he migh' let yeh ride him!" Hagrid tells me. I look at him surprised and he lifts me up onto Buckbeak between his wings. "Don't pull out any of his feathers, he won't like it" he tells me. He slaps Buckbeak's hindquarters and without warning, twelve-foot wings flapped open on either side of me. I just had time to seize him around the neck before he was soaring upward.
Soon we leveled out flying around the castle grounds. I smile loosing my grip. Enjoying the ride. Though it is fun, just like it is riding my broom. Though nothing beats the thrill of flying with my own wings. We soon start to head back for the paddock flying over the lake. He dips a talon into the water spraying us with water. Making me giggle.
As we go to land I wrap my arms around him again. He lands and I sit up straight. I slid off of him. "Okay, who else wants a go?" Hagrid asks the class. Emboldened by my success, the rest of the class climbed cautiously into the paddock. Hagrid untied the Hippogriffs one by one, and soon people were bowing nervously, all over the paddock.
Harry, Hermione, Ron and I are practicing with a chestnut hippogriff. While I not Draco and his goons are with Buckbeak. I have a bad feeling. "You okay Carina?" Hermione asks me.
"Yeah, probably nothing" I tell her.
"This is very easy" Malfoy states. "I knew it must have been, if Black could do it. I bet you're not dangerous at all, are you? Are you, you great ugly brute?" he asks Buckbeak.
It happened in a flash of steely talons; Malfoy let out a high pitched scream. Next moment, Hagrid was wrestling Buckbeak back into his collar as he strained to get at Malfoy. Who lay curled in the grass, blood blossoming over his robes. I rush to his side putting pressure on the wound. "You idiot, Hagrid warned us never to insult a hippogriff" I snap.
"Class dismissed" Hagrid states as he joins me. "I'll get him to the hospital wing" he states. Hermione ran to hold open the gate as Hagrid lifted Malfoy easily. Very shaken, the Care of Magical Creatures class followed at a walk. The Slytherins were all shouting about Hagrid.
"They should sack him straight away!" Pansy shouts.
"It was Malfoy's own fault" I snap glaring at the Slytherins. "Hagrid said Hippogriffs are proud creatures and never to offend them. If he had been paying attention like he was suppose to, this wouldn't of happened" I state. "I'll see you all later" I tell my friends before going to Charms early so that I can speak to Professor Flitwick.
"Ah Miss Black, you're early" he says surprised as he sets up for our lesson.
"Care of Magical Creatures ended early due to my idiot cousin hurting himself. I wanted to talk to you about my timetable. I think you gave me the wrong one" I tell him.
"We wondered how long it's take you to notice. Professor McGonagall and I thought it best you and Miss Granger have the same schedule. Given that you both have to use time turners. We thought you both would cope easier if you had the same schedule" he explains. "Do you wish to change it to the Ravenclaw schedule?" he asks me.
"No, I was just confused why I was the only ravenclaw in my last class. When I know at least two others choose the same subject" I tell him. "Do you need help setting up?" I ask him and he nods his head. He has me set out levitating books at each desk. Soon the rest of the class arrived.
"Today we will be practicing the general counter charm on these levitating books. You all studied the theory of it last year. Time to put that knowledge into practice" he tells us. "Now enunciate Finite Incantatem" he tells us. We do that the rest of the class. Hermione and I were the first to do the charm properly. At the end of class we were given homework to do. An essay on the use of the general counter charm and what it can't be used for.
