Carina's POV
We reach the tunnel entrance. Hermione goes out first and we all follow. Professor Lupin warned Pettigrew to behave. Harry is talking to my uncle as they look up at the castle. I look up at the cloudy sky and remember what I had forgotten. "Oh no" I say.
"What is it?" Hermione asks me.
"It's a full moon" I tell her.
A cloud shifted. There were suddenly dim shadows on the ground. Their party was bathed in moonlight. From the full moon. I see Professor Lupin's body go rigid. Then his limbs began to shake. "He didn't take his potion tonight! He's not safe!" Hermione gasps. I draw my wand.
"Run. Now" Uncle Sirius tells us. But Harry couldn't run. Ron was chained to Pettigrew and Lupin. He leapt forward but my uncle caught him around the chest and threw him back. "Leave it to me, RUN!" he shouts.
"Stay behind me Hermione" I tell her as we back away slowly. There was a terrible snarling noise. Lupin's head was lengthening. So was his body. His shoulders were hunching. Hair was sprouting visibly on his face and hands, which were curling into clawed paws.
As the werewolf reared, snapping its long jaws. Uncle Sirius disappeared from Harry's side. He had transformed. The enormous, bearlike dog bounded forward. As the werewolf wrenched itself free of the manacle binding it, the dog seized it about the neck and pulled it backward, away from Ron and Pettigrew. They were locked, jaw to jaw, claws ripping at each other.
Hermione screams. Pettigrew had dived for Lupin's dropped wand. Ron, unsteady on his bandaged leg, fell. There was a bang, a burst of light and Ron lay motionless on the ground. "Expelliarmus" Harry says disarming him. "Stay where you are!" he shouts.
Too late. Pettigrew had transformed. We saw his bald tail whip through the manacle on Ron's outstretched arm and heard a scurrying through the grass. I curse and transform taking flight. I use my advance vision to try track him. But he disappears into the forest.
I hear a howl below and see Professor Lupin in wolf form heading for the forest. I dive and land beside the others human. "You're an animagus?" Harry asks.
"No time for that" I tell him.
"What did he do to him?" Hermione asks we as we gather around Ron. Ron's eyes were only half-closed, his mouth hung open; he was definitely alive. We could hear him breathing, but he didn't seem to recognize us.
"I don't know" I tell her. Harry looked desperately around. My uncle and Professor Lupin are both gone. Snape still unconscious.
"We'd better get them up to the castle and tell someone" Hermione states. But then, from beyond the range of their vision, they heard a yelping, a whining: a dog in pain.
"Uncle" I say.
"Sirius" Harry says. We took off running towards the sound. Both worried about my uncle. Hermione right behind us. The yelping seemed to be coming from the ground near the edge of the lake.
The yelping stopped abruptly. As we reached the lake shore, we saw why. Uncle Sirius had turned back into a man. He was crouched on all fours, his hands over his head. "Uncle!" I shout and go to run to him. But Hermione grabs my arm.
That's when I see them. Dementors, at least a hundred of them, gliding in a black mass around the lake toward us. Soon they are encircling us. "Hermione, think of something happy!" Harry shouts as we drew our wands.
"Expecto Patronum" I say and my owl patronus appears. It starts to circle us. Keeping the dementors at bay. But I won't be able to keep this up long. "Help me" I tell them.
"Expecto patronum" Harry says. My uncle gave a shudder, rolled over, and lay motionless on the ground, pale as death. "Expecto patronum! Hermione, help us!" Harry shouts. As my owl begins to fade as I start to feel faint.
"No, I won't lose another family member" I state. I think of a happier memory. "Expecto patronum!" I say firmly. My patronus becomes brighter. But Harry is only managing a silvery shield in front of him. Hermione is trying it to do the spell, but is unable to do it. "Hermione, signal for help!" I shout.
"Vermillious" she says pointing her wand into the air. Shooting red sparks into it. As the Dementors were closing in, barely ten feet from us. Harry is screaming the spell, but not succeeding in making a corporeal patronus. Like the one from his last quidditch match.
"Hermione!" I scream as she collapses. "Stay away from her!" I shout standing over her protectively. "Expecto Patronum!" I yell and my patronus becomes brighter then I've ever seen it before. As Harry falls to the ground as a bright appears on the opposite side of the lake. As black spots fill my vision. I fall to my knees as the light drew nearer as my patronus begins to fade. "I'm sorry" I say to Hermione before losing consciousness.
