A/N: So I made an alteration. The diner was three stories, so what the hell was on the third story? I've rewatched the majority of the show but we never see it and in the show the staircase ended outside Luke's apartment.
Basically my alteration is that Luke under the influence of Lilith's mom as a silent partner already started buying real estate in Stars Hollow. Instead of renting it out to Mr. Doose he enlarged the diner, renovated the entire second floor into 4 two bedroom apartments to rent out while all the third floor and attic became his. The upper floors are no longer accessible through the diner (so weird to me) but at the side of the building instead, the one we never see where apparently the back door to Luke's is but not that door.
I figured why not since Gilmore Girls never tells us how Luke came up with the money in the first place to change the hardware store into the diner anyways. We know he never left Stars Hollow and that he worked there when is dad was alive but never how the concept of a diner came nor the money to do so about so I'm making it happen due to her mom and Aunt Fran's influence.

The ringing of her doorbell woke her. Rolling over in her bed she looks at the alarms that reads 8:36 AM and groans tossing the covers off and grabbing her robe to toss over her pajamas. "Coming, I'm coming!" Lilith calls as she drags her feet across the floor in her fluffy white bunny slippers. "What?" She says annoyed while rubbing at her eyes as she pulls the door open.
"Uh, good morning Lilith." Says the deep male voice that has her freeze and look up.
"Mr. Medina?" Lilith's eyes go wide and she slams the door shut. "Oh God this can't be happening, I have to be having a nightmare. Please God let this be a nightmare." Ever so slowly she reopens the door, only for him to still be there though clearly amused at her panic.
"Are you going to slam the door in my face again?" He asks and she gives a nervous smile and little laugh.
"No, Mr. Medina I won't slam the door in your face . . . again."
"You can call me Max you know?"
"I think I'll stay with Mr. Medina. Not to be rude or anything and I know it's Monday morning but school's out, so why are you here? Aunt Lore lives at the house, you should know this by now."
"I do know that actually. Lorelai was supposed to have a key made for me so I could get my things in before I leave to Toronto. She forgot again, didn't she?"
"I'm sure that's not true. Come on, come in." Lilith says opening the door further and making her way to the kitchen to start making her tea. "She might still be asleep. I know I would be." She says the last part lowly. "Want tea?"
"Her car isn't there. What kind?"
"Black chai. I also have a Thai ginger one."
"The black chai sounds great."
"Alright." She says nodding her head and moving things about before pausing. "Wait, did you say her jeep was gone?" Lilith turns around and looks at him and then her eyes move to behind him where the red light of her voicemail is blinking on and off. "Shit." Lilith mumbles.
"Excuse me?" Mr. Medina looks at her surprised but Lilith just bypasses him, dread welling up and she really hopes that voicemail isn't what she thinks it is and hits the play button.
You have one new message.
"Hey Lily it's kind of late notice what with it being 5 in the morning and everything but Rory and I are going on a road trip so if you could call Sookie and Max and tell them the wedding is off that would be great. Tell Max, just tell him I'm really sorry. Thanks and I'll see you whenever we get back, don't really know when that will be yet. Love you, you're the greatest niece an aunt could ask for. I'll call regularly to check in on you."
BEEEEP . . . End of Message.
Lilith stares at the machine before turning to a frozen Mr. Medina. "Oh, boy."

Luke's Diner
"Thanks for this Uncle Luke." Lilith says as he sits a giant mug and a plate loaded with food in front of Mr. Medina.
"No problem, kiddo." Luke says giving her a small smile before turning to the heartbroken man he'd nearly attacked when he'd found him standing in his goddaughter's place after she called him panicking over what to do. She'd only just managed to stop him from decking him. He was still having a hard time getting that voicemail Lorelai had left her out of his head. "Did you call Sookie?"
"Crap! Can I use your phone?"
"Go ahead." He tells her before looking at Max then Lilith dialing Sookie's number at the other end of the counter and back at Max again. He knew Lorelai had a habit of running out on guys but he didn't think she would take it this far. He especially didn't think she'd do so and leave Lilith to clean up the mess and that was what really ticked him off. "Jesus, what was Lorelai thinking?" He says to himself in frustration, not realizing he'd spoken out load.
"Figured you'd be happy. Aren't you in love with her?" Max asks Luke.
"She's a friend I help out." Max just stares at him. " Ok maybe there was something I felt for her but that girl right there is my family, I thought of her mother as another sister. Lilith is probably as close as I'll ever get to having a kid of my own and Lor- that woman just dumped everything on her. The fact she could do that is just the final bit of proof she wasn't who I thought she was."
"Oh thank God, Miss Patty!" Lilith exclaims momentarily drawing their attention as she rushes to the woman's side. Both of them already knowing the reason for Lilith's reaction albeit for different reasons, Luke having lived in Stars Hollow all his life and Max having been told by Lorelai during one of her spiels.
"What am I supposed to do now?" Max asks. "I already told my landlord I'd be moved out by Monday, half my things are already moved into Lorelai's house, and I have no where to live once I'm back from Toronto which I need to leave for next week. This is a nightmare."
"Look Max, Lilith has a key to the house so I'm sure you can get your things. You're Lil's favorite teacher or at least you are when your not involved with Lorelai so I can't believe I'm saying this but you can stay with me until you find a place. It's not big or anything really but I mean I had the place renovated a few years ago for when Lil would stay with me during the summer and the guest room hardly gets used. If you haven't found a place by the time you leave or come back there's a 2 bedroom apartment upstairs that frees up next month since the tenant is moving, I'll save it for you."
"You would actually do that?"
"Don't mention it. Seriously, don't."
"Ok, Miss Patty is spreading the word. What did I miss?" Lilith says taking a seat nearby.
"Nothing kiddo. How bout some french toast before you head out to pick up Snowflake? She spent the night over at the vet's after she got spayed didn't she?"
"Yeah, I have to pick her up at 3. French toast sounds great! Extra syrup, please. Ooh and hot chocolate."
"With a dash of cinnamon and lots of whipped cream. Coming right up." Luke tells her, reaching over the counter to muss her hair with his hand.
"Uncle Luke!" Lilith screeches and Max Medina just watches them and for the first time that morning he smiles.
