Test scores were released on Friday. Bokuto was elated when he saw that he'd received an overall average of seventy nine percent. Rounded up, he'd basically gotten an eighty. Surprisingly, the math portion was where he'd scored the highest. Bokuto was practically vibrating in his seat. Akaashi squeezed his hand tightly, a gentle reminder to calm down as they were still at school. Bokuto smiled back at him. Unsurprisingly, his boyfriend had gotten a score of ninety nine. This weekend, Bokuto would take them out to celebrate the end of the first semester and for their amazing scores. He could hardly wait to go home and make reservations.
Kuroo was satisfied when he saw his average of ninety seven. That was one percent higher than last year, wasn't it? His parents were pleased to hear that their son had gotten one of the highest scores.
"Tetsurou, how is the internship going?" his mother asked.
"It's hard work, but not as bad as expected."
His mother smiled and sighed. Oh no. That look could only mean one thing in this household. She was about to reminisce about her past and take this as a good opportunity to teach a "valuable" lesson. Kuroo looked at his father, who only smiled and continued eating. Kuroo sighed.
"When I was younger- no don't roll your eyes at me," his mother started. Kuroo frowned, pushing around the beans on his plate. If he moved them the right way, it formed a cloud. "As I was saying," his mother continued, "when I was around your age, I was at the top of my class, just like you."
"I know that."
She ignored him. "All of my friends were out partying or causing trouble. Of course, I chose to spend my time studying instead. A lot of my classmates looked at me oddly for it. I'll admit, what they were doing looked... Really fun. Sometimes I wondered if I was wasting my time. If my hard work was worth anything at all." She took a long sip of her tea. Kuroo set down his chopsticks. As much as he hated to admit it, what she was saying sounded painfully familiar.
"But I kept at it. I figured, if I was already committed to my studies, I may as well go all out. So I worked my absolute hardest in every class I had and it landed me in my dream university. That's where your father and I met, you know. And now we have you. If I could go back, I wouldn't change a thing."
Kuroo blinked. Both his parents worked in STEM and he would be no different. What she said made total sense. It didn't matter what anyone else had said about her before. What would they say now if they saw her in a multi million yen mansion? Kuroo would just have to work the hardest, be the smartest, and he would achieve success. He wanted to help create change and nobody did that by being lazy.
"I'm excited about the future," he said with a grin.
"I bet you are, kid," his father chimed. "How's Kenma doing by the way? We haven't seen him in a while." Kuroo tensed. Lately, for obvious reasons, things had been kind of weird with Kenma. Which was why he'd avoided bringing him up lately.
"Kenma is fine," he replied, shoveling more rice in his mouth.
His parents raised their eyebrows and looked at each other.
"Fine?" his father repeated.
"Fine, good, whatever. Same as usual," he mumbled. He scooped up the last of his rice and stood to put his plate in the dishwasher. If this conversation went too much further then... Actually, Kuroo had no idea what would happen. His parents thought that their son had a friendly relationship with their family friend which, yes, was technically the case. However, when did "friendly" get too friendly? For now, it was safer to lay low.
He nodded to his parents and dashed upstairs. At the end of the day, it didn't matter whether or not they approved of his love life. It's not like he had time for any of that anyway. If Kuroo really wanted to focus on this scholarship, there could be no distractions. Plus, Kenma had never outright said that he returned his feelings. What if he didn't feel the same way? Kuroo sighed, thinking about all his efforts made into growing their friendship into something more. Had he just been wasting his time?
