The Trinity of the Football Party

The school went ballistic after they'd won the playoffs. Kids were raving about it all over social media. The halls were decorated with congratulatory messages for the football team. The principal even issued a speech over the intercom during morning announcements. Everyone was over the moon, yet Oikawa was drowning in self pity. On the one hand, he was extremely proud of Bokuto and Astmu for the work they'd put in but on the other, he hated that the whole ordeal reminded him about Iwaizumi.

When people asked him how he was doing, he told them that he was focusing on finals and graduation. A relationship was the least of his worries. Still, with every lie he told, he was hit with a pang of guilt.

Many times he thought about talking to Iwaizumi again, but he could never seem to swallow his pride. A week after their big blowup at the playoffs, Oikawa still had yet to take action. Each day, he told himself he would confront the situation soon, he just needed a little more time. Two weeks later, nothing had changed. It had been three weeks since they'd last spoken and whenever he saw Iwaizumi in the halls, he held his head up high. Maybe if he refused to acknowledge the other's presence, the feelings would fizzle away over time. But at the end of the day, he found himself back in his debate about apologizing.

Now, on a Friday night, he sat alone on Terushima's balcony nursing a glass of red wine. Summer was right around the corner. Oikawa sighed, one leg bent, the other stretched out as he leaned against the exterior wall of the third floor balcony. Booming music could be heard in the backyard where the party was being hosted. Oikawa stared down below, watching as people slowly filed in.

Terushima's father was a business tycoon with ties all over the country and overseas. For the past week, Oikawa had been looking forward to this party. He needed something to take his mind off of his failed relationship. And if that meant drowning himself in wine he didn't even really like, then so be it. Later, he would move on to something stronger, but right now he wanted to start slowly. As he took a sip from his second glass of the night, Oikawa looked down at his bare wrist. It had taken a lot of courage to finally lock away the cursed piece of jewelry for good, and he missed the way it somehow complimented his every outfit, but it was the first step towards moving on.

Iwaizumi was well aware that Oikawa would be at Terushima's party. He was a social peacock, always at the scene of every crime. He had many friends on the team so it only made sense that he'd be attending. Yet as Iwaizumi walked up Terushima's driveway, he didn't see any of Oikawa's cars parked. Had he decided not to come after all? Iwaizumi shook his head. This party was about them and their win, there was no reason to be worrying about Oikawa Tooru.

Shortly after their first argument, Iwaizumi had gotten over it. He'd come to the conclusion that he might have blown things out of proportion, overreacted a little. Was it possible that he had been misreading the things Oikawa was saying?

Despite the hurt he felt in his chest, he couldn't deny that his feelings were still there. If Oikawa wanted to date other people after high school, there was nothing he could do to change that. Until then, Iwaizumi figured he could cherish the time they had. The easiest fix would be to clear the air between them, so they could get back to normal as soon as possible. They'd go back to dating... or not dating...? They'd go back to whatever they'd been before the fight and when summer ended, they would set boundaries on their relationship. Even if they weren't dating, Iwaizumi didn't see why they couldn't stay friends.

So he'd planned to apologize to Oikawa after the playoffs. It was already a good sign when he saw the other boy watching from the bleachers, in Iwaizumi's hoodie, too. It looked like he had the same idea as Iwaizumi. However, by the end of the game, Iwaizumi wasn't so sure. Maybe it was the way Oikawa explicitly went out of his way to congratulate everyone except Iwaizumi, or maybe it was the way he rushed off immediately after.
