Spy School Goes Wild

Chapter 6

I woke up in some sort of cell. Erica, Chip, Jawa, Warren, Mike, and Zoe were already awake. We all had the same sort of chains around our wrists and ankles, except for Erica. Her chains looked significantly stronger and thicker.

"Oh, finally. You're awake! It's been so borotonous sitting here watching you jidiots."

The last word stuck in my head. Jidiot.

"Ashley?"

"Yep! It's me!

Ashley came into view. As usual, she was wearing a sparkly leotard. And hair glitter. And sparkly nail polish. In fact, the only part of her outfit that didn't look like a glitter bomb had exploded on it was a thin black bracelet on her wrist.

"Joshua's not guarding us?"

"He can't."

"He's really dead?"

Ashley shrugged. "Yep. Totally blinks. I'm in charge now, though!"

Also as usual, Ashley was more chipper than a chipmunk. The only weapon I'd been carrying was still on me-possibly because they hadn't noticed it. It hardly even counted as a weapon-it was more of a keepsake.

It was a small Swiss Army knife. 

My sister had gotten it for me when I was eight, shortly after she'd accidentally closed hers on her thumb, leaving a tiny white mark.

I jumped, startled, as a Taylor Swift song started playing in the background. Ashley looked faintly annoyed. 

"Didn't tell them to play this. Nidiots."

"Nitwits plus idiots?"

"Duh. Better go turn it off."

As Ashley left the room, a hand slipped in through a tiny skylight in the roof and started trying to unlock it. Something about that was off-not just the fact that there was a hand trying to break into my jail cell. Or the fact that I was in a jail cell. That kind of thing happened a lot at Spy School.

No, the thing that caught my attention was the thumb. Or rather, the mark on the thumb.

We were being rescued.
