At the sight of Miriam's hand, Erica had become suddenly alert, too, watching it carefully.
"Did you know my sister?" I whispered. Erica nodded.
"Since we were five."
"She never told me."
"I asked her not to."
"Oh."
The hatch opened and Miriam dropped into the room.
"Hey, guys!"
Her voice brought back a flood of memories. Playing on a playground. Reading a book together. Sneaking candy into the house.
I pushed back the memories. There was no time.
Miriam pulled out her knife-yes, the same one that had given her a scar-opened a corkscrew on it, and started unlocking Erica's chains.
She was just unlocking my chains-last-when Ashley came back.
"Oh, nuts." Miriam said. "I was hoping to get away without a fight."
And for the second time that day, I was knocked unconscious.
