"Eric."
I ignore Saranna. Lani, my closest friend since childhood, is dead. She's dead and it's my fault. I made her come along with me. If she'd just stayed home, none of this would've happened. Lani would still be alive, and we would all be celebrating Christmas right now, not planning on how to tell her parents that their daughter died.
"Eric, are you okay?" I look up to see Saranna, a girl with auburn hair and glasses.
"For fuck's sake, Saranna, SHUT THE FUCK UP!" I snap at her. She looks taken aback and hurt, and I immediately feel guilty.
"I- I'm sorry, I didn't mean to"
"It's okay. I'll just- I'll give you some time to yourself," says Saranna, walking out of the living room. I take a deep breath.
WHY did I make her go with me? Why? WHY? I'm an idiot, I'm a fucking idiot.
"Eric, we're going to Lani's parents," says my Native American friend Meztli, walking into the room. I nod, not looking at him.
"We discussed it, and we feel that you should tell them since you were the closest to Lani." says my dad, walking into the room. I nod again, fearing that if I speak, I'll just start crying.
"Eric, are you okay? You are strangely quiet." Of course I'm not okay, Meztli, my friend just DIED!
"Just leave him, Meztli," says his older brother, Ehecatl.
"I'm going to my room, tell me when we're going," I say, standing up. My parents and friends nod.
Why? Why couldn't I do anything? All I could do was lay there like a useless piece of shit and watch my friend get killed by that- that monster.
I enter my room. This.......this is unacceptable. I cannot be at peace, I WILL NOT be at peace, I will do everything in my power to track down Shadow Hunter and paint my walls with his blood-
I hear a gentle knock on my door. "Eric? Can I- can I come in?" I hear my mom's voice.
"Yeah," I say, my voice cracking. My mom sits beside me on my bed and gently places a hand on my shoulder.
"Eric, honey, you must know that it wasn't your faul-"
"Don't say that, it was my fault. Despite knowing that people were targeting me, I made her come along with me. And I couldn't do anything when she was about to be-" I stop, too emotional to continue speaking. My mom nods silently and pulls me in for a hug. Despite me not liking getting hugged by my mother, this time I don't pull away.
Suddenly, we hear a commotion downstairs.
"Oops, sorry about the flower pot, I'm not too good at warping other people yet." Is that Karl Resti's voice, the little kid who I met a while ago who can teleport?
"Karl? What are you doing here?" I hear Saranna exclaim.
"Eltrod wanted to speak to Eric."
I stand up abruptly, startling my mom, and head downstairs.
"Oh hello Eric," says Eltrod, looking up from picking up the shards of what was once a flower pot.
"Hi," I manage to say.
"Is this a bad time? I- I think I'll come back later," stutters Eltrod.
"No, it's fine, what is it?" I ask.
"Well, it's about your friend.....actually can we talk about this in private?" asks Eltrod.
"Sure, let's go out to the front yard."
"Alright. Don't worry Mr. Grilsky," says Eltrod to my dad, "we won't be long."
Once outside, Eltrod faces me with a serious expression.
"What?" I snap.
"Listen, Eric, have you heard of necromancy before?"
"Yeah, I have, what about it?" I ask.
"Well, Eric, at Paranormal Academy, we have our fair share of necromancers-"
"Where are you going with this, Eltrod?"
Eltrod looked uncomfortable. "Well, I know you probably wouldn't do something stupid like this, but under no conditions are you to make a necromancer....you know......"
"Resurrect Lani?"
"Exactly."
Suddenly, I was filled with hope. Maybe, just MAYBE, Lani could be resurrected! Maybe there's hope after all!
"Eric, I understand your pain, but you have to listen to me!" pleads Eltrod.
"No, you don't, Eltrod. It was my fault Lani died. The least I can do is try to save her again."
Eltrod sighed heavily. "Grief and anger are clouding your judgment right now, Eric. I just hope that you'll return to your senses. Some things from the past are best left there."
Author's note: Yay, new book! You might've noticed that the cover's the same as the last book's cover. The reason is.....well........I can't be bothered right now to make a new cover (: So anyway, thanks for reading this chapter, and I'll see y'all in the next one! ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
