"Over 100 new cases of the new virus arxis have risen, 30 of which were here in-" I cut the TV off, silencing the voice of the news anchor who spoke. Her voice creates so much panic in my mind. I try not to freak out every time they talk about how many new cases are being discovered in our town but I can't help it. We've been dealing with the new virus for about 4 months now. I'm just glad it hasn't affected us yet.

I turned my head to the sound of the front door opening and watched as Lucas stepped inside. He removed his coat and dropped it on the floor by the front door before removing his shoes and finally his mask. We have a routine of leaving miscellaneous clothing at the door, anything to be safe.

"Hey," I said as I stood in the kitchen entryway waiting for him. He smiled before going into the bathroom to wash his hands and wrists, which is what we always do when we come inside the house. Once he was done he returned to the kitchen.

"I'll wash my coat after dinner." He said as he pulled me to him by my waist. I reached up to pull his face down before placing a kiss on his lips.

"Did you find any batteries?" I asked as we sat down to eat the dinner I prepared before he got here. He shook his head sighing.

"Everything's gone babe. Batteries, chargers, lighters. People have literally lost their minds." As he's talking, I'm wondering what batteries could do to protect you from disease.

Arxis starts by giving you rashes, typically on your back and stomach. The rashes cause your body to overheat, to which your brain responds by telling the body to cool down. When that happens, your body temperature lowers to dangerous levels and you experience fever-like symptoms while being cold. Once you get there, there's usually no turning back. And everyone that reached that part of it, didn't survive.

It's primarily an airborne disease but can be spread in so many ways. It makes you almost not want to touch anything out in public.

"Well, all we have to do is what we've been doing, right?" He stopped moving his fork around his plate to look at me. He knows how much I get worried.

"Yeah." I nodded and he gave me a reassuring smile. He's the only thing that's keeping me sane during this whole thing.

The Next Morning

I rose from the bed and looked to the side of me to see Lucas laying on his stomach. I ran my hand over his broad back that was covered by his t-shirt and traced his shoulder blades with my fingers. But I stopped when I noticed a rough spot. I slid my hand under his shirt and it felt even rougher.  I rushed to pull his shirt up, waking him up in the process.

"Babe, what are you doing?" He asked groggily with a chuckle in his voice. When I finally got his shirt up all the way, I threw my hand over my mouth. He had a rash that was a bright red color in between his shoulder blades. Some parts of it looked new and other parts looked like they were trying to heal up.

"What?" He asked seriously as he watched my reaction.

"You...you have a rash, Lucas." He removed himself from the bed and walked quickly into our bathroom. I could see him looking into the mirror from the bed and his mouth came open.

I grabbed my shirt and got out of the bed before pulling it on and following him.

"We should go get you checked before it spreads." I said. He nodded and took a deep breath as we walked out to go see his doctor.

After The Doctor Visit

"I don't understand it!" Lucas shouted in the car. I placed my hand on his shoulder but he smacked the steering wheel.
