Danny returned to Clara's flat in record time, dressed in jeans and a plaid button down shirt. But when he entered the living room it was empty."Clara, " He called out and was answered with a ringing silence. He noticed the light on in the kitchen and walked toward it.
"Clara," Danny bellowed again,"I'm-" Jane stepped out of the kitchen startling him.
"Danny," she exclaimed ," I think Clara is gone." Danny's jaw unhinged; he couldn't utter a word.
What was she talking about? I wasn't gone long.
"You mean she ran out for a moment?," he asked. He hoped.
"No, no I think you should see this." Jane stepped aside, visably concerned and it just made the fear in Danny's chest grow. He briskly strode into the kitchen then stopped, trying to make sense of the scene before him. On the table was the three bags of Halloween candy. The bag at the edge of the table was surrounded by a dozen or so shiny candy wrappers. Danny knew that it was Clara's bag. He also knew the Doctor warned them not to eat the candy because it seemed to cause the disappearances of the children. And now there was no sign of her. Dread coiled tightly in his chest and it became harder for him to breathe.
Clara is gone.
"We need to get the Doctor," Danny choked out and passed Jane on his way out.
"Exactly what is the Doctor's name? Doctor who?" Danny couldn't fathom why that was so important to ask right now.
"I don't know. I think it's just the Doctor,"
"Well that's peculiar."
"People are vanishing into thin air, your son included and that's what's so peculiar to you!" Danny faced Jane who stared st him wide-eyed in shock and leaned against the wall in dispair. He calmed down instantly, ashamed of himself for yelling at her. She had a right to ask questions. God knows he did.
"I'm sorry," he said, wiping his hand across his face. "I just... I love her." He ran into her bedroom where the Tardis waited, and burst through the doors.
"Doctor!"
"How dare you just barge onto my Tardis like that! Watch the doors!"
"Doctor!"
" Honestly P.E, you just force your way inside her, not even waiting for her to open the doors like some wicked bloke. And didn't I tell you-"
"DOCTOR!" He finally stopped his rant when he saw Danny's face.
"What happened to Clara, Danny?"
The Doctor made his way towards him, his expression unreadable."She-she ate the candy and now she's gone," Danny stuttered. The Doctor raked his hand through his peppered hair with unmistakable frustration.
"Well where were you soldier?!" the Doctor spat out in rage and pointed an angry finger at Danny. "Why weren't you watching her? How much does she mean to you huh? I mean really soldier-"
"I'm not a soldier! At least not anymore so stop calling me that. And I'd never let anything happen to Clara if I could help it." And he meant every word. His heart already ached for her while hope kept him from believing that she was gone forever.
"It was my fault," Jane's timid voice echoed from behind Danny. She was obviously trying to hide her astonishment of the inside of the police box while speaking. " She was taking the tea back to the kitchen while I sat on the couch. Danny went home to change. I didn't think Clara would eat those candy's. She seemed like such a smart girl."
" She is and she always does what I say. Well mostly. The point is she was sucked into a trance the moment she saw it. She wouldn't have been able to stop herself." The Doctor grabbed a piece of candy from under what looked like a microscope with a large lens. Danny noticed for the first time that he changed back into his original attire.
" The Tardis identified the substance in the candy to be delibinous. It's original use is to act like anesthesia so a person will be unconscious for a period of time. There are other ingredients, for flavor and hypnosis, but delibinous comes from a very specific planet. A planet I've never gone to. Crandor.""Do you think that's where she is?" Danny asked eagerly. Out of the corner of his eye Jane was walking slowly around the Tardis.
"It's possible. I hope not though."
"Why not?"
"Well delibinous makes people unconscious not just for a few hours. It could range anywhere from a minute to billions of years. We could land in Crandor and not be in the right year, century even."
"But you'll still do it. Right?"
"Of course. But there might be an easier way."
