Clara stepped around the Doctor into the room, but the Doctor jerked her back.
"Don't let the light touch you."
"But you fixed it!"
" Somehow they reopened it. But why? And how?" The Doctor sounded astonished and remotely irritated to her.
"A rip in the fabric of time and space," Clara whispered.
"I can't fix this without the Tardis. Even then... I don't know if I have enough time."
"Well we do if we hurry." Clara turned to go back down the stairs and heard the Doctor follow after.
Back out on the porch, Danny and Jane were waiting when they both walked out of the house. The Doctor didn't stop, just went down the steps and onto the lawn. Jane jumped out of the rocking chair looking at the Doctor and then Clara quite confused.
"Miss, what's going on? Where's my son?"
"And where is he going?" Danny chimed in.
" The Doctor is going back to my flat. Come along, I'll explain when we get there." It wasn't long until they arrived at Clara's flat and the Doctor headed straight into her room where the Tardis was waiting.
"I'll be out in a second! Don't eat any Halloween candy! I need to figure out what exactly it is." Then he popped off into his blue box.
"Well what are we supposed to do in the mean time?" Danny asked to no one in particular.
"This is crazy, I'm crazy. Why haven't I gone to the police? Why am I here with you lot. You're all bonkers." Jane was staring at the blue box in the middle of the room. It was hard to believe, Clara knew, but if this woman wanted to find her son, she needed to trust them.
"Let me just explain," Clara spoke, like she was talking to one of her students who found a lesson hard to understand. She put a hand on Jane's shoulder and gently led her to the couch. Clara didn't miss her desperate glances to the door as they passed it, and tightened her grip slightly as if she could keep Jane from running out. They sat down facing each other, while Danny stood awkwardly behind them.
"I'll just go... and make tea. If you ladies would prefer it?"
"Yes, tea will be fine," Jane sighed, a tiny tear slipping out of her eye and down her cheek. Clara could only imagine what she was going through with her child missing and depending on an alien, a girl dressed as a cat, and a guy as a pig, that she had only met less than an hour ago, to find him. She would try her best to let her know it would be okay and she couldn't have found better strangers to help her. She just had to figure out how.
"Clara? Tea for you too?" Danny woke her out of her thoughts.
"Uh, yeah. Thank you Danny." He smiled warmly at her before turning away and heading towards the kitchen. Clara stalled a bit by smoothing out her skirt.
"So is he your boyfriend?" Jane asked, curious.
"Huh?" Clara was startled by her question. Danny wasn't supposed to be the topic.
"Oh, I'm sorry I just assumed. Silly me."
"No, it's alright. Yes, he is my boyfriend."
" I could tell by the way he looks at you all concerned and adoring, and you blushing. I thought well if they weren't together, it won't be long before they are. He's a doll by the way, a real gentleman. Even though he doesn't really look it in that ridiculous pig outfit." Clara couldn't help but crack up to that, and Jane joined in with a hearty laugh. At that exact moment, Danny emerged from the kitchen with a tray of piping hot tea. They both took one look at him, and continued to laugh even harder. Danny set the tray on the coffee table in front of them.
"What are you girls laughing at?" He didn't seem to get it at all which just made it funnier, to the point where Clara couldn't breathe, and Jane had tears streaming down her face. Danny just continued to watch them, trying to figure out what was so funny when he finally got it. He was the only funny thing in the room.
"Alright, alright. It appears you two can't handle the manliness of my costume, therefore I have to change." Their laughs subsided into giggles as Danny grabbed his keys.
"I will be back in a minute," Danny said to Clara, pecked her gently on the lips, and headed for the door. When the door closed, silence echoed through the flat. They both took their time sipping hot tea from chipped cups, but then Clara decided that she couldn't waste anymore time. Every second counted.
"Okay, before I start I need you to keep an open mind. This will sound impossible to you and you won't want to believe it or you will try to send me to a mental hospital, but every word I will say is true. So please, just listen." And she did listen, to all of it. Clara couldn't tell whether she believed her or not but she sat quietly and still, never moving her eyes off of her. When she finished, she felt light, like a huge weight had been lifted off her shoulders. Clara had never just told someone about this separate life she lead with the Doctor. Danny just sort of walked into it and she was forced to tell him or else he would have left her. This was different though.
Jane still didn't say anything, she didn't even seem to be breathing, until suddenly, she snapped out of it.
"Well, that seems to be a wonderful story." Clara's smile faltered at the word "story."
"I believe you Clara, and I know you'll get my son back." Clara clasped her hands together and sighed with relief. That was exactly what she wanted to here.
"That's wonderful. Um would you care for some more tea?"
"Oh no, thank you. I am perfectly fine," she exclaimed shooing her off.
"Okay then, I'll just take this tray back to the kitchen." Clara got up and grabbed the tray, careful not to drop it. She held it out so Jane could set her cup on it then went into the kitchen. There on the table was the bags of candy they collected trick-or-treating. Clara stared at it hungrily.
Maybe just one piece. I won't eat the colorful ones, just a candy bar.
She set the tray down on the counter and fished around in her bag for some chocolate. She pulled out the colorfully wrapped candy instead. Clara meant to put it back, but decided to take a closer look at it. It was pretty. The colors on the wrapper seemed to be plucked from a rainbow and made into foil. Slowly she unwrapped it, mesmerized by how cool it felt between her fingers. The candy dropped into her open palm.
She gasped. The oval candy shone and glittered in the light, like a million tiny diamonds embedded in gold. She turned it over several times and her eyes glazed over with desire. Clara lifted it to her lips and popped it into her mouth. A rich sweetness much like melted chocolate spread across her tongue and glided down her throat. It. Was. Heaven. She reached for more, consuming it greedily until her stomach swirled with a sick feeling. And by then it was too late. Her body shattered into dusty sparkles that vanished into thin air.
