By the time we finally trudged into the village, day was breaking.
I haven't slept in three days and I can't even think straight. I don't remember most of the walk, and I'm not even sure what I'm seeing is real. This village of hand built log cabins, deep within a small valley in the mountains. I hear running water, and I smell fresh bread.
Swaying on my feet, Cody removes my pack and picks me up, carrying me into one of the cabins. Up some stairs and onto a soft bed.
"Shh, you're safe now. You're home. Our home. Rest."
My eyes close. I'm floating, sinking, swimming through darkness. Then there's a pale light. The moon? The light gets brighter, not blinding and hot like the sun, but cool and clear. Peaceful.
A beautiful woman appears with long flowing straight white hair, and kind grey eyes, a mother's eyes. She smiles warmly and opens her arms to me. I run to her, accepting the embrace. I do not know her, but I feel like I've known her my whole life.
"Sweet child, my beautiful Brielle, you have no idea how important you are.
Soon you will wake up, and so will your wolf. Soon you will understand. Soon you and your sisters will be saviors.
Now wake up."
Wake up.
Wake up.
Wake up.
"Brielle, sweetheart, wake up."
Where am I? I'm disoriented. I'm in a bed? I haven't slept in a bed in years. There's a gorgeous man standing over me........ Cody. It all comes rushing back. Cody, my mate.
The hike, the bear, men who turn into wolves, it all rushes back. Along with the intimacy we shared in the woods. My face flushes.
"How long was I asleep?" My voice is husky with sleep.
"Almost a full day. The sun is rising, your sisters are up. I have to take you to meet Alpha Tyee." Cody looks nervous.
"Who's Alpha Tyee?"
"He's our leader, like our chief." Cody says as he helps me up.
My body is sore from days on the move, and a bear, and probably from sleeping in an actual bed. I groan as I stretch and rub my sore thighs.
"I thought you'd be sore. Here, I made you tea with mullein leaves. It will reduce the swelling in your legs." Cody hands me a small clay cup. It's herbal, slightly sweet. Not at all bad.
"Thank you." I sip the tea and look around the room. The walls are hand cut timber and natural spackle seals the spaces between. It seems to take up the entire second level of the small cabin. There are windows on either side of the room, with ancient looking glass, that's thick and has a sort of side show mirror effect when looking out it. As for furniture, there's the bed, a night stand, and a wooden chair. Candles are on the night stand, and an oil lamp hangs by the door. The floor has many animal skin rugs, I assume for warmth in the winter. "Is this your room?"
"Yeah. It's not much but it does the trick." He awkwardly looks around as of he's seeing it for the first time. "You can do whatever you want with it.. it's yours now too."
I take him by the hand, "It's perfect as long as you're here."
"Come on, Cody!" Bill interrupts from down stairs.
"Right, we have to go see Alpha Tyee."
We go down the narrow staircase to the first floor. There is a small kitchen with a wood stove, a table and chairs, and a well worn sofa next to a large stone hearth fireplace. Some colorful woven blankets in traditional native designs are on the sofa, and herbs are hanging to dry in the kitchen. Candles are scattered in various places around the open area. I can smell the natural beeswax.
