My wolf? Is that even possible?
"But, the change happens at eighteen? I'm twenty-one. I thought it was too late?" The idea that I may yet have a wolf is rocking my world. What would it be like?
"You're a hybrid. The rules aren't so black and white with you. Anything could happen. But if it's going to, I would bet on a full moon, when the pull is strongest." Bill answers. "Since you were marked, have you noticed anything different?"
"I don't think so..." I try to pin point anything. "I can feel Cody. I know where he is, and I feel what he feels." Cody looks at me and smiles. I feel his pride in me, his mate. He is our mate. We love him.
"But I don't seem to hear him," I tap on my head. "I haven't developed any mental link, not with him or the pack."
Bill considers this for a moment, "That may be because he's unmarked. Your bond is as complete as it can be, but it's not fully done."
Another wave of guilt washes over me.
"We will see. Either way, you're perfect to me." Cody reassures me.
"Alright kids, I have to finish preparing for tonight. Looks like snow, so I have to work on that." Bill says, grabbing several jars and feathers.
Liz reluctantly leaves the books on the table and follows us out. "Cody, do any of those books have pack ancestry? I'm a bit curious how there are so many members of the pack light eyed and some with light hair. Is that due to the werewolf genes or?"
Cody purses his lips, considering how to answer. "Like Bill said, we, the Navajo and other natives, weren't the only people the Moon took favor on. Over the centuries, we found mates in other packs, not all were natives. But our pack has kept its heritage and beliefs, regardless of the blood that mixed in. I do believe there's a book in there that's a registry of members going back at least a couple hundred years. If it's not in the pile already, You can ask Bill."
Liz looks back towards the apothecary, longing for the books.
We return back to our cabin with Liz and Sky, sitting on the sofa and on blankets on the floor near the hearth, chatting about ourselves.
"Where are you all from, originally?" Cody is starting to inquire about us, and I realize he hasn't really asked any questions about us until now.
"The East coast. We moved a lot, but always near the ocean," Sky answers. "Our dad worked on ships, he was a merchant marine for years until he met our mom, then he calmed down and did repairs at docks."
"What was your lives like?"
"I was in a few sports; wrestling, cheerleading, mma. I liked going to the beach. I had a lot of friends even though we moved every couple years.." Sky summarizes but I can tell she's thinking about how much she misses that life.
Cody looks to Liz. She blushes and quietly answers, "I was kind of a nerd. I like books, I got good grades. I had a few friends." She trails off.
"She is brilliant, skipped ahead two grades levels. She made excellent grades, was going to graduate with both her high school and bachelors degrees early. She does love books, and animals, exotic teas, warm fireplaces, autumn, history, and her guilty pleasure is macarons." I answer for her and grin as she turns a deeper shade of red.
Cody chuckles, "it's hard not to notice how intelligent you are, Liz." He turns his attention on me, "what about you, Brie?"
I sigh, trying to think about what my life was like. "I didn't ever have a real set of interests.. I liked to garden with my mom. I enjoyed going shooting with my dad," I pause and nibble on my bottom lip, "I took care of my sisters when my mom and dad were at work. I enjoyed cooking. My favorite was waking up to my mom cooking breakfast, the smells of bacon and warm syrup. I liked the beach..." I'm really struggling to think of much I cared about besides my family.
