I've never had to test my self control so much in my life. The kiss in the woods was mind blowing. It took all of my strength to pull back and not claim her right then and there.
My wolf practically screamed, unwilling to stop. "She is ours! Why do you resist?!"
"Because she is innocent to our ways! She's not ready!" I reply silently.
Brielle pleads with me for answers that I don't know how to give... But Bill will.
On the way back to camp I reach out to Bill through the mental link; something all werewolves are capable of within their own pack, if the distance is close enough. It's the strongest between two fully mated wolves, reaching anywhere in the world.
I explain to Bill what's happening.
"That makes sense, why you're acting like you are. Congratulations boy. I'll be waiting for you two at the camp." He answers back through the link.
When we arrive Bill is waiting with 3 cups of greenthread tea, made with dried bundles he keeps in his medicine pouch. As the pack healer, he is always prepared with an array of remedies for any possible ailment.
Bill offers the three sisters the cups, and reassures them it's not harmful.
My wolf is pacing, impatient with the situation. I can't blame him. Anxiety is flooding by thoughts, instinct warring with the necessity for self control at the moment. The worry that she may not understand. That she may be frightened. She may reject me.
Rejection... when a wolf rejects their mate, it's incredibly painful. The pain and emptiness can drive a wolf insane, even resorting to death rather than live alone. Mates are chosen by the Moon herself, and it is fate. To reject fate, wolves aren't often given a second chance to find another mate. If ever.
I hang back in the trees, too nervous to sit in on the story Bill is giving to the girls.
The middle sister, Skylynn, is highly skeptical. I can't blame her. If I was in her shoes, I'd laugh at the idea too. People changing into wolves, the Moon being an intelligent existence, the whole lot of it.
She wants to see proof.
Of course she does. Bill looks to me and I shake my head, "If I shift, my wolf will be in control," I lock eyes with Brielle, desire rising in me, "and I think that outcome requires some privacy."
Bill agrees to shift and walks out to the woods, passing by me with a chuckle. "What a day!" he laughs through the mental link.
Moments later a large black wolf with white hairs around his face emerges from the darkness. Proudly, his golden eyes glowing, he strides into the light from the fire. Only Skylynn dares to question him.
I like her, she's feisty. I can tell she's completely loyal to her sisters, and trying to keep them from being hoodwinked by a couple of potentially insane men in the middle of nowhere.
Brielle elbows her in the ribs, earning a few choice words from Sky.
Looking at her sisters, Brielle stands up, "This is real!" Then she is looking at me, our eyes lock, "This is all real."
The world narrows, focusing in on her. It's only She and I in the entire cosmos. The trance breaks at the sound of a deep masculine voice.
"Well, time to eat." Bill has returned from the woods.
He takes the bear roast that has been resting the entire time we revealed our, and their, secret.
Eating is the last thing I want to do right now, but I know I need to. My stomach rumbles and I know I'll need the energy. Wolves burn several times more energy so we have to eat, a lot.
