“So, wait, your soul mate isn’t dead?” asked Calum with furrowed eyebrows.

Luke nodded with a sigh, running a hand through his hair.

“Wow, your life could basically be written into a story.”

“A story that’ll probably make people throw the book away halfway through because of all the drama in my life.”

Someone opened the door and a boy who Luke noticed had an eyebrow piercing walked in. As soon as Luke laid eyes on him, he felt his heart flutter ever so slightly, and he wasn’t sure why he felt this way. It wasn’t the flutter that indicated he’s scared or nervous. It was the kind of flutter the heart makes when the person sees their loved one; and although, Luke never experienced that before, he knew that this is how it feels.

He watched as the boy went through the alternative rock aisle. Luke wasn’t sure if he was searching for something specific or just wanted to buy a new CD, but he thought, ‘hey, I can give it a try.’

And so he walked over to the boy, flashing him the best smile he could muster, which, the other boy noticed, looked sad and small. “Hello, how can I help you today?”

“By staying away from me,” said the other boy quietly that Luke almost didn’t hear him.

“Pardon?” said Luke, just to make sure he heard him right.

“You can help me buy staying away from me and stopping the fuzzy feeling in my heart when I saw you that I do not understand what it exactly means, can you do that?” snapped the other boy.

Nothing went through Luke’s mind but the words ‘fuzzy feeling in my heart.’ This must mean that he felt it, too.

“Fuzzy feeling?” asked Luke quietly.

“Please, just leave me alone. I’ll find what I want by myself.”

Luke, however, started to slowly get it. But he kept questioning himself, ‘wait, am I gay? Am I really looking right at my soul mate right now?’

“Do you see things in colours?”

“Didn’t I tell you to leave me alone?”

“Just answer my question, please, and I’ll leave,” said Luke shakily.

The boy shook his head. “No. That’s why I don’t understand why I’m feeling this way towards a complete stranger,” he paused before shaking his head again, picking up another CD. “This whole soul mate thing is just a myth, anyway. We’re stuck with the depressing black and white while watching everyone else pretend to see things in colours.”

“But I can see—”

“Didn’t you say you’d leave me alone after I answer your question?” snapped the boy, giving Luke a glare, but he quickly looked away because the longer he looked at him, the stronger the urge of pulling him in for a kiss got.

Luke just simply nodded and walked back to the cashier-counter where Calum was.

“What was that all about?” asked Calum, who had already heard their conversation.

“I- uh, I think he’s my soul mate.”

“What?” asked Calum with a surprised gasp. “You never told me you were gay.”

“I-I’m not. Or, well, I didn’t know I was. Still don’t know if I am or not. I still like girls, but I wouldn’t mind having him as my soul mate despite the snappy attitude and the lack of fat on his chest and the thing dangling between his legs.”

“I heard that,” said the eyebrow pierced boy from where he stood, feeling his cheeks heat up as he glanced at Luke.

-

The boy ended up leaving without buying anything, much to Luke’s dismay. He wanted to ring up the CDs he buys and just touch his hand when he hands him his items to make sure if he’s his soul mate or not. But, obviously, luck wasn’t on his side that day. Or ever, for that matter.

He went back home with – yet again – a bad mood. He just wanted to take a break. A break from work, from the soul mate thing, from the dull colours that are only depressing him even more; he just wanted to take a break from life.

Despite his bad mood, he still tried to put a smile on his face when he saw Ashton using his laptop in the living room and the blonde walked over and plopped down on the couch next to his roommate. “What’re you doing?”

“Comic Con,” replied the other boy simply.

“You’re doing Comic Con?”

“Yes,” he said without thinking until his mind processed what Luke said and he tore his gaze from the laptop screen to his friend who had his eyebrows raised. “No, I mean, I’m checking the tickets and stuff.”

“Oh. When is it?”

“Next week.”

“Can I come along?”

“Is that even a question? Of course, you can. I’ll even buy you the ticket.”

“I have enough money for the ticket, Ash—”

“Nope, that’s’ your birthday present,” Ashton cut him off.

“We’re in the beginning of November, Ashton. My birthday’s in July.”

“Yes, friend, I am aware of that,” said Ashton, adding two tickets to his cart on the site. “Very early birthday present. Or early Christmas present. Maybe both.”

Luke rolled his eyes and laughed. “Yeah, okay, early birthday and Christmas present.”

Ashton grinned as he got his credit card, looking at the number grazed into it and typing it in. “There’s a new guy in my class that I’m teaching. I don’t know why he wants to learn how to play the guitar.”

“Is he that bad?”

“Bad? Oh, no,” Ashton shook his head. “He’s fucking amazing at it. Better than me, honestly.”

“Odd. What’s his name?”

“Michael.”
